Talk about used games market in general was something that had been talked about before E3 2013. In January of 2013, President of Sony conducted an interview about possible next gen hardware in that interview he's asked about used games, Shuhei reponded by asking the interviewer if he thought used games were a good idea, guy said "no" and Shuhei responded by saying something like "yeah that's what I thought". I bought an Xbox One a year after release then a ps4 the year after that. Looking at the games for both, most my PS4 games are exclusives and I use my PS4 way more than my Xbox One. I only been using my Xbox One for backwards compatibility with games like Bully, Halo Reach and Force Unleashed 1+2 along with Shadow of Mordor which I recently got. PS4 is a blast this gen. Though I have a 360 last gen.

Buying a physical copy was going to be the same as buying a digital copy, it would download to your console and link the title to your account, so you could play without the disc, and you were also originally going to be able to share your library with 10 other people.
Nowadays our consoles are always connected to the internet anyways, and the majority of us buy digital, I think Microsoft (and Sony) were headed in the right direction with the DRM, we just didn't understand it at the time like they did.

Not him, but even if they didn't, Sony played E3 beautifully from a marketing standpoint. From what was a cool console for a new game gen, they turned it into a platform that cartered a need and a solution that Microsoft itself created, outside of memes and shit DRM in a console didnt exist yet and people were afraid of the consequences, then PS4 comes and is like "fuck that shit".
Sony saw MS literally hand them a golden ticket to make the PS4 look like godsend and use these features to brainwash the conference audience.
Playing games with no connection neded and no DRM is something my PS2, Gamecube and even my fucking old ass gameboy does. It was nothing new, but people took it as a savior to a problem MS created. It's like if MS was a politician and came to stage and call for nuclear war and killing puppies, while Sony just said "Mate thats retarded".

The problem was in the end the conference. By the 7gen's ending, they were doing fine afaik.

The problem was making such horrid announcements that made people genuinely angry, which led to Sony to dominate the intial release, thus securing their position.

At this point, the one thing Microsoft can do is wait for a new gen and unjust their shit, but might be too late already.

Yeah, to be honest, I wish I could play the games I own physically without having to swap out discs all the time. After using Steam, it feels such an anachronistic concept to have to change physical discs. I wish I could just play those games straight off the HDD. The disc is only used for verification purposes at this point.

I suppose I just have to wait for the console manufacturers to drop the use of physical media and convert to a fully digital distribution platform.
