It lacks the "impact" that Seven had in some parts, but it lets you do more stuff and the smithing system is better. Not like it matters tghat much. It's more of the same, but with less interesting moments.

If you enjoyed Ys Seven, you have nothing to lose.
The characters are enjoyable to play as along with being different enough from Seven (even Adol handles differently, and no longer gets a sword that does everything like in Seven, so you are encouraged to use all characters, even though I don't recall the last boss where you use all characters (IIRC) being too tough, and the final-final boss, fucking spoilers hurr, that you fight with solo Adol goes down like a little bitch). That said, bosses are still at least mostly amusing to fight against. I feel like they didn't plan on Flash Dodge being so OP though, and as a result, you can feel a bit overpowered at times, even on the hardest difficulty.
If you're a huge Ys-fag though, don't miss it. There's a lot of callbacks to both versions of Ys4 and the callbacks that were in those games as well (though they aren't as well-done as Dawn, and even Mask to a minor extent, did them where you literally could revisit or utilize stuff from before making it feel way more connected). There's a lot of neat lore shit as well, even new stuff in Adol's scattered memories. Some of it comes across as a bit strange though, but it's nothing to get buttblasted like some retards on /v/ did.
Also, IIRC, Adol doesn't have a single "yes/no" that may not lead to something hilarious (such as bullying Duran).
Despite it being just "good", I still loved it. More so because I got the super-special fuck-you deluxe version that came with a replica of Adol's Journal, which felt "LIKE I WAS REALLY ADVENTURING WITH ADOL".
