I was about to talk about the element wheel in Soul sacrifice but realized it was the other way around

Heat > Venom > Stone > Volt > Frost > Heat

I remembered something about Volt but realized it was effective against ice and weak to stone instead. The explanation for this wheel is like:

Heat burns Venom (it's all Plant themed)
Venom (Plants) splits Stone
Stone absorbs Volt
Volt shatters Frost
Frost douses Heat

A neato thing with Soul Sacrifice is if you hit something enough with that element it BECOMES that element by being stuck in a "hell" (Burning Hell, Frozen Hell, Stone Hell, etc), and if hit with THAT element's weakness it takes a huge amount of damage in some explosion.

So some shit is Venom element and weak to fire, hit it until it's afflicted by Burning Hell, and blast it with Frost for some knockdown damage bonus explosion

I'm not saying the open world is necessary, or even good. I'm just saying that there's plenty of interesting things to do when it comes to side/main quests and they all have something to do with the core mechanics. Plus, with the story (every character, even the shitty ones, has a fucking backstory), there's arguably already too much going on.

Here's hoping they release a tournament or some sort of lobby-based vs DLC.

That's the thing, you actually could in RPS because everyone adjusts their pickrate of elements based on the chances of success.

For example, if we introduced mushrooms into RPS that beat rock and paper but lost to scissors, more people would pick it because it beats two other elements. Because it's picked more, more people would pick scissors to counter it, leading to a balance where mushroom is very attractive to pick because it beats multiple things, but scissors becomes even more attractive because it beats a popular pick (Just like in real RPS, more people pick rock on their first go than any other object so statistically picking paper first will grant more victories.).
