Kirby was never god-tier powerful.
He lives in a world where most of his foes barely try to stop him with even bosses going back and forth, you could put almost any protagonist in Kirby's spot and they could beat Kirby's games with ease.

Smash abilities aren't canon, Kirby gets a generic ability from elemental attacks which are usually pretty basic attacks. He's also reasonably slow.

Not canon. We can see Kirby's Fighter ability where he punches doesn't do that much damage. Also Kirby's planet shows no visable destruction after the event.
