It hurts since they'll probably drop out of favor for a few more years, but you gotta enjoy it while you can get it anon. Just like RPGs had a long dry spell and now they're getting some love of various types and quality.

In fact the last few years have been especially good to gaming as far as my tastes go. Lot of good strategy games and RPGs, and then surprises like some good immersive sims. Speaknig of sims, someone needs to fucking make a proper Sims competitor with actual gameplay instead of the lazy dollhouse 4 ended up being and I'd be set.

Sqeenix fucked over their gaijin devs with bullshit scammy marketing gimmicks to try to wring maximum profit out of them. HR didn't need a sequel. They should have just left it alone and made a DE with in a new setting with a new protagonist. The fact that they tried to squeeze money out of people via bullshit DLC didn't help. SE basically ran the series into the ground out of greed.
>>
I bought it and enjoyed select parts of it. Mostly fucking hated it.

The shift of the in game attitude towards augs is the main reason I couldn't get in to it. In HR people were afraid of you because you were new, scary, and better than them. In MD the entire aug demographic has been degraded to dindu nuffins. Fuck, they even had "aug lives matter" in an advertising campaign. Really took the fun out for me.

Secondly, it was annoying to have your boss screaming in your ear every five minutes when you were trying to do side quests.

Finally there's the fucking weapon animations. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WHILE I TRAVEL IF I CAN'T REPEATEDLY PULL OUT THE PISTOL TO SEE THE COCKING ANIMATION.

The story went to great lengths to romanticize the aug rebels fighting valiantly against their oppressors while trying to mitigate the effects of bad apples in the movement.

That's what I got from it anyway

>tfw by the time Deus Ex gets another game Bob Page's voice actor will be dead or retired
this legitimately saddens me, he's already starting to sound a bit old in MD
>>
>>383960407
that could've easily been written off as the mechs just being obsolete and inferior compared to nano-augs

actually i'm pretty sure that's exactly what they said in DX
>>

>regretting getting a free dota 2 adam jenson announcer

ree
>>
>>383960407
That was already explained in the first game. Nano and physiopharmaceutical augs are more efficient with fewer drawbacks. Mechanical augs were just invented first.
>>
>>383960438
Yeah but that's because you're in an aug ghetto the entire time. There's several conversations where you can go against the "dindu nuffin" augs who complain about everything to you. I remember specifically that nigger nurse right at the start of Golem City. You can pretty much tell her she's dumb and move on.

On another note, the side quests in MD were fucking 11/10.
>>
If they didn't cut 2/3 of it to sell dlc I might have.
>>
>>383957806
Because all of them had horrible marketing campaigns and were launched in an unfinished state. I would say that their sales failures are due to how incompetent publishers are, not because the market doesn't want immersive sims

If Xcom 2 hadn't been the same year though DXMD might've been my GotY.
It's kind of a struggle between that and Dishonored 2, but even then I might lean Dishonored 2 just because it was overall a bit more satisfying.
>>
>>383960549
Nano-augs aren't even public knowledge in Deus Ex. In HR they ended up writing Augs has something a shitload of regular people had, versus the original where it's just military personnel. It doesn't really work out very neatly, in fact it was pretty stupid to take the aug angle with the story to begin with.
>>
>>383960573
I did? I don't care about dota 2 anyway. The content I did get was cut from the game anyway and then given out for free later. The price was lowered significantly like a month after the game released too.
>>
>>383960608

Square Enix Europe apparently forced them to push that cash shop microtransaction shit which helped turn the opinion even more against this game in the last month leading to launch. Time that could've gone to optimizing the game so it ran better went to putting in >$4.99 for a one-use cash shop pay2win boost IN A SINGLEPLAYER GAME
>>
>>383960583
I just missed being notrobocop, man.
>>
>>383955490
ah but I did
and I quite enjoyed it

the problem really is that the modern gamer doesn't care for cool details and well designed open worlds
the modern gamer would rather complain about features that the game doesn't even tell you about like microtransactions - I played the game for ~100 hours and I only knew that there were microtransactions in it when someone told me
then you have weeaboos who cry because there's no east asian hub

and sure the game just sort of ends abruptly, but that's square enix's fault
I'm sure that in time there'll be another one out eventually

No one will ever convince me that Denuvo wasn't part of the problem with all these games' sales.

Dishonored 2, Prey, DXMD - they all sold like shit, in large part because discussion about the games was close to 0, and the only time they ever got talked about was by people who were mad about denuvo and said the games were shit, which scared away potential buyers.

>>383961501
Consoles generally have the most short term sales, ie immediately after launch, but PC eventually gets even or wins out in medium/long term sales. Add to that the fact that publishers, on PC, don't have to share the profits three-ways (retailers and distributors), and they have a much more direct access to the consumer's pockets, the profit is generally higher on a PC version.

I do agree with that, Skyrim, GTAIV and other AAA garbage has benefited a lot from medium to long term sales. Mankind Dividided, Prey and Dishonored 2 probably will too, the problem is how publishers think and what do they consider a failure. If the game doesn't sell like 5+million on the first 2-3 weeks then it's considered a failure. Absolutely retarded line of thinking but that's your average big publisher

>>
>>383961748
It's possible, but it depends how much you want to stretch the genre and how tight the focus is. Immersive sims benefit arguably the most of all games by having a budget so you can put a lot of detail in. An indie one presumably wouldn't have that, so it would need to be smaller scale.

Like if you consider Pathologic an immersive sim which you KINDA could, that sorta counts. Although "Sell" might be kind of a stretch too.

Yeah, definitely. It's really sad.

It's double sad in the case of MD because for once I felt that Eidos was a studio with the potential to make Deus Ex games worthy of the IP. MD had absolutely excellent art, level design and side quests. I fear that by the time Square decides to make another DX game, Eidos either doesn't get to make it, or the people who were involved with HR/MD have left the studio by then, or as that other anon said, some iconic voice actor is no longer with us.

This. No matter how many people pirate a game, the positive publicity and word of mouth that generates will always outperform the downside of lost sales.

It's odd that publishers choose the most interesting games in their release catalogue to draw some pointless line in the sand. Makes you wonder if they don't secretly want to prove that the more complex and risky projects aren't worth funding over casual action and primarily cinematic stuff.

One of the worse examples of this is Capcom, RE7 sold pretty well but they considered it a failure because, for some unholy reason, they expected 10 million sales. It is not crazy to think that SE expected something similar to MD, the thing is that they are way worse, all the meddling they did with the game killed any hype for the game and prevented Eidos from doing serious work to optimize the game, there was also a serious lack of marketing for that game a good example was E3. They did the same shit to Hitman, making it online only for some retarded reason, not marketing and then the whole temporary missions. SE is fucking awful when it comes to marketing, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest sell thanks to the power of the japanese and weeb fanbases

Because these giant videogame companies usually do not think that they fucked up. They tend to blame everything on the game itself and the studio for failing to meet sales expectations rather than doing an in-depth analysis on what went wrong. I want to say that is a mix of the sheer arrogance of these executives and their own incompetence in comprehending that a game doesn't need to pander to everyone and that it needs proper advertising. SE is especially bad at failing to realize these simple things.

On the other hand, they may take this as a statement that Deus Ex simply does not work as a franchise that can be milked through microtransactions and for that reason, can the series altogether and focus on something that will work for these shitty practices.
>>
>>383961474

It's no wonder they showed off this part of the game during their demos for it. It was the only part of the game where shit finally escalated and the story got interesting. Between this and the end, everything else was dull and boring.

The side missions were better than most of the core storyline.

Actually I pre-ordered it. My total was almost $100 Canadian if not more than that. It had good gameplay mechanics but the ideas behind the game stunted it's potential. The execution was better than the thought that went into it.

With Deus Ex, part of the appeal is the vast conspiracies that has some relatable truth in real life. Towards the end the game, I thought we were gonna deal with the Illuminati fags but the game ended.

It's hard to relate and really care about augs vs normies when that hasn't really happened IRL.

Yeah the whole basis for the story in the prequels is pretty weak. Augmentation was relatively minor in Deus Ex (largely just a gameplay mechanic). As was said in another thread, setting a game in America during an outbreak of disease and political turmoil (which happens shortly after MD) would've been more interesting.

Here is how you salvage the IP. Get Warren Spector and give him a budget to remake the first game. With a budget and time he could actually finish it this time and realize the vision he had for the game.

I didn't buy it, and still haven't bought it, primarily because they tried to jew it the fuck up with shit like microtransactions in a single player game.
Secondarily because instead of letting the decently competent HR stand on its own and set a new scene to bridge that to the original DE, they had to try and franchise Mr. Jensen like he's Ezio With Augs.
Tertiarily because they didn't even bother to actually complete the narrative, but obviously expected to sell me the other half for 40€+ later on.

Even though it didn't reach the excellence of DE1, I liked HR a lot more than I ever expected to and thought it had potential as a jumpoff point for creating something that COULD have surpassed the first.
It's a damn crying shame they settled for trying to repeat it -and squeeze it- instead of improve it.

Yea it taught them( a business) the business lesson of don't make games that don't have mass market appeal.

The previous entry didn't sell that well either, square assumed that it would reintroduce the franchise to the market and the sequel with a much bigger presence would eventually sell better.

Instead gamers didn't buy the game because FIFA, COD and GTA is what top charts not serious cyberpunk RPGs.

>>384004501

The Missing Link integration is nice but it really, really fucks with the pacing
>>
>>384004501
It's broken. You can't pause or stop the commentary. If it's playing you can't go to new zones like in and out of sarif building or limb clinic so you have to go into the menu and manually turn of commentary off then exit menu then go back into menu and turn it back on if you still want it for later every time. Sometimes if you go to a spot that would allow you to start playing a commentary clip and you walk over the spot again it cancels the currently playing clip and you have to hear it from the beginning if you want to hear the rest while stealthing around the spot.

It's a fucking crime since the commentary is god tier. They talk about why the game is all yellow, they point out cut content and what it would have been, they shit on the game itself because they were forced to do certain shit because of time constraints like cut hubs that didn't make it in. its bretty gud.

This talk is actually a response to /pol/'crybabies who complain about (the percieved wrong kind) of politics in videogames while at the same time demanding games that fit into their worldview e.g., no women or blacks. Eyes I would swap instantly if they improved by eyesight or any organ for that matter but my hands and legs work fine, I would never cut my arms to get a metal one.

Too much little shit that kept adding up until the game dropped out of my "by immediately" zone. Hare brained marketing schemes, micro transactions, one time use dlc, a goddamn multiplayer component that no one asked for to shoehorn in more micro transactions, the usual performance and bug shitfest, finally followed up be reviews telling you that you're left hanging at the end by the story, angling for a followup that back then "may" and now "will" never come.

Squeenix Europe is led by suits that don't have any connection to what the fanbase may appreciate and it shows. Any of the mentioned issues can be swallowed in small doses, but as a whole, they hit enough alert buttons to make me go back to my pile of shame and wait it out. If I had bought it right away, I'd have sent them the message "great job guys, keep doing that shit that I don't like", with no way of telling them to change that crap. Now I don't get a sequel, but at least now they can't pretend that everything went well and we'll eat it up.

Yes they would. It's the offer of self improvement without having to actually alter your lifestyle or improve yourself in any meaningful way. It's a shortcut to betterment.

People would be all over that shit. Why work out or eat a decent diet or inconvenience yourself in any way when you can pay to have a mechanical limb that's superior in almost every way? Especially when the job market is full of augmented people getting all the good jobs because they're objectively better than you? You're underestimating how competitive, vain and stupid people can be

See, it's funny because Zhao was the one who said "men never fail to underestimate women" after playing Jensen like a fiddle when he stormed into her office demanding justice

because i didn't want another game with adam jensen, and because i saw videos and the facial animation looked absolutely awful. and then people told me it was half a game so i never bothered.

i still think the original deus ex is the best in the series. i don't even remember much of human revolution apart from it being very limited technology wise due to consoles.

How does that work out, if you side with Tong and create the Dark Age how can the Illuminati or the newly fused Denton rule the world?

JC merging with Helios backfires and wrecks the Aquinas Hub, so the Illuminati step into the gap and reinforce their control of the world
