Midna is the worst companion, because she's full on Poochy. She steals the entire focus of the plot to the point that the confrontation between Link and Ganondorf actually feels shoehorned in. He doesn't even talk to Link, he ONLY talks to Midna, until he beats her off-screen and then suddenly Link and Zelda are teleported out of castle and have to fight Ganondorf instead.

Navi doesn't -personally- stop you from going any spot you shouldn't, as Hyrule itself is naturally gated to restrict you as much as it can. However, she will chime in now and again if you're not progressing the story fast enough and the game feels you've become "lost".
