There should be a Mega Man game with focus on the world he lives in. Instead of a level select screen, you can traverse a gigantic sprawling map.
To incentivise the player, each general point of interest on (mini-boss, powerup, secret) could be highlighted for quick travel and visable on the world map by way of towers.
Instead of direct upgrades, mini-bosses could drop blueprints, from which the player could craft themselves through collactble enemy drops.
Due to the size of the world, Mega Man should be able to craft his own junkyard base, which he can evolve into a warehouse or a robot-driven settlement.
NPCs could even be recruited through a simplistic dialogue system, and live in your base for the collection of resources.
Combat would be just like the traditional games the player expects, but with the inclusion of a special Mega Man mode that slows down time and lets you pin point individual body parts.

I think the only universe an openworld MM game would work is battlenetwork. MM doesn't have much "meat" to really be open world and wasn't made for it. Also op is a faggot

Don't you fucking rub salt in that wound you cunt, I'd fuck Hitler's corpse for anything resembling new Battle Network

Megaman has extremely colorful and dynamic takes on places as monotonous as race tracks, a river, power plants, greenhouses, windmills, construction sites, and solid waste disposal sites.
Only problem is the inbetweens. X has an elevated highway as the most iconic level; so it's not likely there's skyways in Megaman.
