Most people don't actually outright hate, or even dislike it, but general consensus is that it's the weakest of the 3 GBA Castlevanias.

It's a decent 7/10 game on its own merits, but CotM and AoS are quite a bit better.

This was the one that got me into the Castlevania series. I loved Circle of the moon and pretty much all the handheld CVs afterwards.

No its generally considered one of the weaker metroidvania's but it was the first GBA game. It's by no means bad.

I think a lot of people compare it too much to SotN, Circle of the Moon greatly improved on SotN's biggest flaw though the difficulty.

Circle of the Moon is like number three behind SotN and Aria for me.

And sometimes I put CotM above Aria. I really loved the card system and it felt like the best mixture of Classicvania and Metroidvania.
