If you haven't played the original trilogy, give them a go in order. All Layton games have really feelsy endings accompanied by gigantic plot twists (some of them require a bit more suspension of disbelief than others). 3 is probably the best Layton though.

I loved the bittersweet ending but I found the plot twist incredibly hard to believe even in something as fantastical as Layton. The gas had to have caused him and Luke to hallucinate the exact same things the entire time in order for the game to work and make any sense.

How the fuck do they deal with the core mechanic massive reveal spoiler that throughout the whole game, everything on the top screen was June's voice, and everything on the bottom Junpei (I may have this the wrong way around). You can't do that fucking shit without two screens. I don't care when people go HURR DURR THE STUPID MINIGAME AT THE END IS RETARDED; that shit doesn't matter. Removing a huge part of the narrative style is unforgivable though, and completely changes the tone of the game.

Returning to Shadow Moses in MGS4 will probably always stay in my top vidya memories just because of how damn well executed it was.
Having you play through the original MGS for a bit in a dream sequence before heading out was a really nice touch and got me so excited to see how it'd look with all the fancy modern graphics. Seeing it all come into view and hearing that flute intro to The Best Is Yet To Come was perfect.
Then you realise that Shadow Moses is all old and busted and not at all like you thought it'd be. You hear all the echoing voiceclips and realise that you can't go back.
At the time I thought this was the final MGS game and I was sure Snake was going to be killed off, but the realisation really didn't strike me until this moment. Felt bad. Really bad.

The original trilogy came out in Japan in 2001-4 on the GBA, and was ported to English for the DS in 2005.

Notably, Shu Takumi (the creator) was involved heavily with the translations, which allowed a lot of the references and idiopathic language gags to carry over well, unlike some of the poor fan translations.

The same is true of Ghost Trick, although the 'four (minutes) = death' thing didn't really translate; it is referenced as a gag however.
