First timers are better off sticking to patched vanilla, or using the almost equal "Starter Pack" mods.

More experienced people are better off trying out bigger mods that they think would appeal to their tastes and needs. My personal favorites are AMK1.4 for SoC, TFW3.8 for CS, and MISERY 2.11 for CoP.

Not a fan of CoC; too pointless sandbox sim

CoC does seem really boring to me, too open and not much to do, even with some of the addons for it.

doesn't help that I found The Faction War 3.x to do it all better, years earlier, with much more interesting new features and actual goals.

Still, IMO STALKER is loved partly because they're not exactly sandbox games; rather, fairly open and dynamic single player experiences with clear start and end.
