PvE is Gauntlet and Forge. Gauntlet is free. In Gauntlet you play a series of 7 battles, the final one is a boss fight with a special rule or condition. If you lose a battle you start back at the beginning. The longer you go the better your rewards are. Gauntlet is the best way to farm gold.
Forge is sort of like draft, where you get to pick 1 out of 3 cards to make a deck out of 25 cards. Then you fight PvE again for 7 wins. It's easier than Gauntlet because your deck is more janky. You can get legendaries from Forge. I managed to pick two legendaries in the same forge run a few days ago.

I did grind Gauntlet for around 3 days and got around 60k gold. Packs are 1k gold, but I spent around 40k of it playing Forge (2.5k per entry). Got around 6 legendaries from just picking units from those runs, plus enough shiftstone to craft another two sets of legendaries (a set is 4).

But pretty much anything you play, gauntlet, ranked, draft or forge, you're gonna get a lot of new cards. It's pretty generous. Also as of this new patch you get a free pack for the first win of the day.

It's basically MTG with a good online client
you got 5 colors, you declare attackers and blockers and you can act on your opponents turn with some spells/units
also pretty generous, they throw gold at you and your rewards have a random chance to upgrade to better reward tiers which can include a free pack
