TLG was a bad game but it had some pretty deep feels

Ico is Ueda's best game for many reasons.

It marked the evolution of cinematic platformers from 2D to 3D. There was a real sense of gravity to the movement of your character that was reminiscent of the original Prince of Persia and Out of this World.

It subverts traditional damsel in distress video games by a) actually communicating the stakes of rescuing someone through escort gameplay mechanics and b) implementing a twist ending that turns the damsel in distress trope on its head.

It also encouraged experimentation and exploration in console gaming. Developers didn't have to push out generic shooters, platformers and action titles. There was space for something that blurs the lines of genres - taking aspects of platforming, action and adventure games. This during a time when traditional adventure games were considered dead.

It also paved mainstream acceptance of video games as art.

It also influenced many successful titles including Twilight Princess, the Ubisoft Prince of Persia games, Metal Gear Solid 3, Uncharted 3, Brothers: A Tale of 2 Sons and Fez.

TLG is good, main problem is the camera not being well suited to some of the cramped indoor environments and that Trico's AI pathing seems to get shaky towards the end of the game. It also has bad framerate drops on a regular PS4, almost as bad as SOTC did on PS2.

The funny thing about TLG was that the hype was chiefly the fault of the people. This game didn't have six trailers, celebrity voice actors, and was constantly in the headlines. It was just notable because o fuc Team Ico is developing something, and then they developed Ico 2, and everybody was mad because it was 60 dorrars. I wasn't mad, but then again I wouldn't have paid 60 dollars for Ico when it came out. If you played and loved Ico, you'll adore TLG. If you played and loved SotC, but weren't really into Ico, you won't like TLG. The only people TLG let down were people who were ignorant enough to think, despite ALL pre-release footage and interviews, that it was going to be a successor to SotC.

It's a solid atmospheric puzzle adventure game, up there with Talos Principle. If that's your jam, go for it.

If you aren't a massive pleb you'll like TLG. Just go into it knowing that you have to actually treat Trico like an actual animal. Like if you spam commands he'll just get confused and end up doing nothing/not what you wanted. Also, the framerate is downright atrocious and the controls are wonky.
