what do you guys think the best tony hawk game is?
>>
>no level editor
>poor character customization
Not that one, but it was the last decent one I think. Only one I never played from the Neversoft area was American Wasteland
>>
THUG

If anybody tells you it was THUG2 it is a sign they are a fucking retard with no taste.
>>
Tony Hawk 2

This isn't even debatable
>>
>>383894703
THUG2 would age like shit. Has what would be considered literally whos today like Jesse James and other non-skateboard celebrities. I only played the PSP version but I think it was actually almost the same as the PS2 version.
>>
Pro Skater 4
>>
>>383894615
Are the newer games any good?
Played a shitton of thps3 & 4, just picked up 1 the other day too

I have THUG1 and 2, haven't tried them yet, what makes them so much better?
>>
Jet Set Radio
>>
I really enjoyed tony hawk pro skater 4 despite sucking at it.
>>
>>383895679
the most significant change was the ability to get off your board, which if anything just made getting huge combos much easier. they both have pretty silly storylines too, THUG1 for having the worst villain in videogame history, THUG2 for basically just being Jackass the videogame but with skating. American Wasteland was pretty alright too but that was when the series really started going downhill personally (others would argue THUG2 but it's a dumb, entertaining game regardless).
everything since has been particularly awkward and lacking, ultimately ending with THPS5 which has probably killed the series for good for being a well documented catastrophic disaster of a game

THUG 1 and 2 are basically just Tony Hawk games at their most mechanically complete. Getting off the board, wall kicks/sticker slaps, focus mode, flatland and grind modifiers, there's basically nothing you could add to them that wouldn't feel arbitrary or pointless. THUG1 also has some pretty strong level design with some great lines and just in general really strong flow that allows you to go nuts on every part of the level and seamlessly move around to other parts of the level without losing momentum. THUG2 is worse about that. The added mechanics also allowed the levels to be built more vertically than they realistically could be before since you had more ways to get higher.

Basically though depending on personal preference and how you feel about certain inclusions and mechanics, there is a strong argument for 3, 4, and THUG to all be labeled the best Tony Hawk games. They're basically the pinnacle of their respective designs and have the best level designs in the series.
>>
Proving Ground is underrated. It just lacked verticality in the level design. But the gameplay and animations are the best in any 'extreme' sports games to date.
>>
THAW > THUG2

Prove me wrong.
>>
>>383901198
I can't because this is a fact.

THAW is the #1 and THUG2 is #2.
>>
>>383894615
You can't compare the THPS series to THUG/THAW and Project 8. The THPS series is the purest distillation of the arcade aspect, whereas the later games are better as "roaming skating" games.
>>
i loved spending hours just skating around with no end in free mode
holy shit those were the times

The best one is either Pro Skater 3 (6th gen), Underground 1 or American Wasteland but Downhill Jam and Project 8, even with their flaws, are severely underrated
>>

yessss
>>
I've never played anything after THAW, so I don't know how are they, but THAW was the best for me, followed by THPS4
>>
Should I buy the HD one that's on offer at the moment before it gets removed for nostalgia purposes or is it as bad as everyone says
>>
>>383903871
It's completely broken and no fun to play. The physics are just plain wrong.
>>
THPS 3 or 2

4 was breddy good too, neva played UG or UG2
>>
>>383903871
No, emulate the gen 6 games
>>
>>383903191
Not him, but 4 had better levels in my opinion and unlocking a whole new set of missions after beating the game was amazing. The Pro challenges were also challenging, but fun (except for Bam's)
>>
THAW, THUG and THUG2 are the only ones worth mentioning outside of the pro skater series.
>>
>>383907576
Cool. I always grew up with 3 so I have a hard time loving any other one. Maybe I'll play through them again soon and get to appreciate 4

I played through the series from 1 to THAW recently and found THPS3 enjoyable enough to 100% the game, so I'm gonna say that's the best of the classic series. THUG is the best of the non-timed games.

THAW can fuck right off, the whole fucking game is one big tutorial and I was disappointed as hell the whole time.

flatland tricks to link and extend combos. 3 introduced reverts and manuals, 4 added freestyle tricks. I used to be able to do a single combo for well over a minute, once almost two.
>>
To me it's 3
Each of the games added something new to continue combos, it gave a new level of tech you could do. Games after it couldn't really include anything, so they went away from mechanics and more into story and level design. For some of the games, it really hurt it hard.

>4 added freestyle tricks.
You mean the tapping into other tricks while in a grind/manual, right? Those were actually already there as hidden combos in 3- not to the extent of 4, of course, but not only are double and triple tap flip tricks there but various grinds can be linked with slightly different key combinations than in 4 onwards (i.e. 50-50 to 5-0 is up+grind while grinding, then from the 5-0 you can switch between the usual lipslide and crooked with f+f or g+g, as well as bluntslides from standard grinds with up up+g or down down+g). Manual stuff exists too, but isn't as obvious as you have to start with one of a few special trick manuals instead of straight from a manual/nosemanual, but once you're in it you can do handstand flips, switch between casper/anti-casper/casper flips, etc.
>>
THPS3 I ended up playing the most.

Those THUG Pro PC mods look neat.

American Wasteland is my personal favorite. Best soundtrack, best "story", best special ability (slow mo), and it was funny in some places. I remember playing it a lot at my cousins house because I didn't have any 6th gen consoles for a long time, but then I got an HEUG Xbox and beat it on there twice, then a got a PS2 and beat that three or four times. Just a really enjoyable game.

Can anyone tell me what exactly the appeal of THAW is? I never played the console/PC version way back when and upon playing it recently it just felt so, so bad. The running and skating physics felt like they were slightly off the whole time, the graphics were dim and ugly, levels were way too cramped and samey feeling (and for non-samey levels, the Casino and the 'DIY park' the story revolves around both are fucking awful) and the 'no loading screens' gimmick was rubbish, BMX bikes were atrocious, no story mode Create-A-Skater, etc etc. You don't even get to use fucking Special tricks until you're almost halfway through the story and even then you don't get to pick your own or even your own input combinations, you just get a dozen piled on you at once... which you won't even need because even on Sick difficulty, there IS no difficulty. I'm not the best player at all and so I had some issues in THUG/THUG2 with the 2 and 3-million point combo stat point requirements, but THAW was just all over the place- you spend the whole damn story watching cutscenes and then having literally 15 seconds of gameplay to learn a new and not-very-useful trick or a whopping 15,000 point combo.

And then Classic mode is laughably short, only six levels nearly all of which are rehashes, most of which aren't that great, and no point competitions. What a bad tasting finish, seriously.
>>
>>383901391
THAW is what THUG 2 should've been
The only issue I had with THAW was that 90% of the game was a tutorial
>>
>>383911615
Ironically I did have TH American Sk8land on the DS, which I played the absolute hell out of and doesn't play much like THAW at all- it's more like THPS4 Plus, with no off-board stuff, all your abilities and customization available from the start, and more typical goals that last longer than ten seconds a piece. It also had Alcatraz as a full level, which is IMO more fun than the Oil Rig, and both local and online multiplayer, which was really neat (although it's missing HORSE).

American Wasteland originally started out as a punk-themed sandbox action game meant to rival GTA. It was eventually turned into a proper THPS game, with some elements making it to Gun.

I seriously feel like one of the few people that actually liked project 8. While it suffered from a very rushed release and has both FPS and loading issues, I liked the gameplay in it.

THUG, the story and levels were 10/10. Series got progressively worse from then on.

The PS3 is what screwed it up. Anyone can tell you that the PS3 was a humongous pain in the ass to develop for. Both Microsoft and Sony expressed great concern about the game not being gimped on either platform.

Did you ever win a kickflip contest?

Did most of the THPS games have roughly the same dev team, or did they get shuffled around constantly? I know some of the level designers were there for the long run (i.e. whoever's name is applied to TC's Roof Gap and all the other TC's X gaps), but coders, artists, etc.? There's a noticeable shift in the kind of background humor in the games between THPS2/3 and 4/THUG.

THUG2 was better. Seriously, if you don't think it is you better be into Tony Hawk for the story. It even has a classic mode.
>>
>>383915820
No, but I won a trivia contest and won a PS2 Slim with a shitload of games.

The switch in humor and tone is a direct response to Jackass, Viva La Bam and other cultural phenomenon of the early 00s. THUG 2 was pretty much the brainchild of Activision.
>>
>>383916841

The memorable story and levels is what made THUG so much better than the others though, the levels in THUG2 were pretty boring plus the Jackass stuff sucked.

I can accept that reasoning, but I was always into the series for the fun gameplay.

However, I don't think you've replayed both games recently if you think THUG's terrible terrible levels are good. The challenges are terrible, with literal fetch quests in every level, plus worse shit like car missions. The only fun levels are Russia and Hawaii.

Classic mode is the only thing THUG2 has over THUG1. If 1 had a good Classic mode it would be the best in the series bar none, but because 2 is dragged down by all the Jackass shit and worse levels overall, THPS3 is the best game for Classic gameplay.

>tfw you'll never be good enough for THUG Pro

>>383916883
Figured as much. Even before THUG 2's Jackass and a half stuff, there was a definite shift- there was always toilet/sex humor in the games (immediately coming to mind from THPS3: the 'NEVERSOFT RULES' yellow snow and the guy pissing off the ramp in Canada, the porno theater in LA, etc) but there was more mundane stuff too, like the guys arguing with each other in LA and their 100+ different conversations, the workers in the Foundry, even stuff in THPS2 like the Indian taxicab drivers shouting as you drive by. Over the next few games it seems like any sort of humor that wasn't directly in-your-face poop jokes tended to disappear, even before THUG 2.

Come to think, I wonder if anyone's ever figured out exactly how many life-threatening injuries/outright deaths the player causes over the course of the series? Once you count in knocking the Canadian guy into a frozen lake off a cliff, causing an earthquake, then knocking a guy's car off the overpass (while he's screaming in uncomfortably legit sounding terror) into another van, burning down Skatopia, turning people into zombies and then fucking gibbing them with a Segway, knocking the guy off the Cruise Ship into shark-infested water, and so on, it's gotta be pretty high up there.
