Also to answer the op question, I think its 50% nostalgia and 50% enjoyment of something original. There really aren't any/many music genres or groups that sound like retro game music. The tones, sounds and general feel of the music is unique so I think even the oldest tracks like those from Mega Man 2 etc are still very passable if not enjoyable to most people. Also it helps since its electronic, it doesn't ever sound truly dated.
