Is this game fun playing solo?

It was already frustrating to play when the game first came out and there was an actual online community.

I can't even imagine how much of a slog the game would be in single player

Fewer disconnects; it has that going for it.

No, the game was clearly designed for multiplayer, the singleplayer is a total afterthought. It's a much more tedious experience. I have no idea how dead the online is now (probably extremely) but you should try that, or try to rope other people into playing with you.
