After trying split joycons out in the splatfest tutorial I think that's the way to go, it's much easier just waving your right hand around to aim than the whole controller.

Yes, but it's because of a design flaw.
The controller lacks a pivot point beneath the D-pad, unlike literally every other Nintendo controller which has a pivot that inhibits unintended diagonal inputs. In fact if you push the middle of the D-pad it'll trigger all four inputs.

You can get around this by being careful and pressing only the very edge of the pad, but it shouldn't be a problem in the first place.

Split joycons are ELITE in Splatoon 2. Using the left controller to move your character and the right controller moving like a mouse to aim and splat people is VERY comfy

the lag doesn't come from hardware, it's splatoon 2 itself that's causing the problem

apparently the camera has some kind of acceleration (think mouse acceleration) or smoothing or something along the lines of that, that's the source of the delay

Holy shot you weren't kidding. Feels better than the game pad and I had 600 hours on that. Heads up to anyone trying this, don't try using it like the heads up way from ARMS. Just hold it like a grip. Maybe it helps that I'm a filthy wrist aimer in pc shooters. I definitely recommend this for charger mains, when you get used to it the flicks feel so good.
