I have a Vive and love it, but you'd have to hate money and be out of your mind to buy Vive with the rift's current price point.

Vive has a front facing camera but its current motion controls lack gesture recognition until knuckles come out.
Touch is much more compact compared to big ass vive wands without the shitty tactile grips that Vive wands have.
The headmount for Vive out of the box is fucking shit, had to throw in another 100USD for a rigid deluxe audio strap to improve comfort and add integrated audio amounting to 900USD compared to CV1's 400USD which is less than half that for equivalent features and a lighter weight.

Once TPcast and knuckles roll out you get a better experience out of Vive but the cost is immense currently in comparison for little added benefit with the exception of wireless. Someone might come up with a rift attachment that does the same thing for rift anyway.

Back before the price cut Vive had motion controls and everything out of the box earlier. Now the price gap is insane, wonder how HTC will react.

No it is horrible because there is this thing called vergence accommodation conflict, object in your face appear blurry. When you focus away from the object it will look sharper, very annoying.
If the object is far enough for your pupils not to turn inwards then you should not notice it.
SBS video looks even worse than rendered footage especially when shit is up in your face.
Lightfield displays should solve this but that technology is years away.

It was a low blow that they rushed a sorry excuse of a strap and earbuds out the door. Weight distribution was noticeably front heavy resting more on your face.
Got the deluxe head strap recently, it is pretty good both as far as ergonomics and audio quality are concerned.
The overall weight of the HMD gets tiring on your neck if you are leaning a lot or have bad posture, eventually your neck gets sore.

The rift seems more lightweight than Vive.
Haven't tried CV1 so I cannot compare them. How do the earphones sound on the CV1 are they on the level of Koss porta pros or better?

its funny because while VR headsets can do stereoscopic 3D they aren't actually that good at replicating depth. Close one eye and bring your hand up close to your face. Can you tell it's close? Not in a VR headset you couldn't since the lens of your eye is still focusing on a screen. Until VR headsets can somehow replicate physical distance from your eye they are never gonna be fully immersive.

what you are describing is vergence accommodation conflict, light field displays aim to tackle this problem but it will be a long time until they are considered a commercially viable solution.
Doesn't mean VR HMDs can't do stereo at all, just means that it can't do it well for objects very close to your face.
>>
>>383887712
>Until VR headsets can somehow replicate physical distance from your eye they are never gonna be fully immersive.
You're talking out of your ass. They DO "replicate physical distance". Why do you think you need to wear your glasses to use it if you're nearsighted? The screen is inches from your face but those lenses warp the light in such a way that mimics actual distance.
>>
Any vr users tried vr kanjo? It looks like the only good hentai game from it.

different anon, not up close they don't. It is effective within a certain distance but the current way they go about optics is not without its flaws.
I have a VR HMD myself and can testify to the stereo effect not being particularly great for objects close to your face. Developers just have to ensure that most content you interact with does not get close enough for your pupils to converge inwards.
Less of a problem with video games, more noticeable with porn.

One annoying issue I exhibited with Vive when playing H3VR and aiming down sight with thin sights is that they get blurry.
Seems to be a different problem with the sweet spot of the lens and not vergence conflict accommodation since I can see the sights sharp if I line the rifle up to the center of one of my eyes lenses, which gets very tiring on my neck since the positioning is very awkward.
I tend to have both eyes open and tilt my head slightly when aiming looking to the left. When doing so I am not actually looking down the center of the lenses, my vision drifts closer to the edge of each lense which causes the blurry effect.
Some games tackled this by making the gun sights unrealistically huge which would be a turn off for a gun simulator trying to achieve 1:1 scale.

You don't have to use Vive in roomscale, even then you don't need much space for most games with artificial locomotion.
Should be fine standing in place being able to take a single step in each direction from the centre of the play space.
I have approximately 2x2m playspace which I find plenty but you could make do with 1.5x1.5m or a bit less.

For people who don't know what VR games are like

its complete shit.

It can't run anything like subnautica without making you throw up from motion sickness. The majority of VR games are gallery shooters where you are stationary or you use the controller to warp to different areas. The room scale only benefits minimal movement even in a large room because you are tethered.

The only way to freely move around is if you buy a literally baby walker where you are stationary and can move 360 degrees.

I agree with the price currently being too steep with little benefit, but it has more advantages than that.

>Replaceable Headmount
>Front facing camera
>Knuckles controller with far better finger tracking and grasp detection
>TPCast Wireless module so you'd have no more cables running to HMD
new peripherals adds even more to the cost so you end up overspending and peripherals you get out of the box that are being replaced would be wasted money and material.
I do like its somewhat modular design, if cost is no object the Vive is the better solution overall from a technical standpoint. Rift at its current price point is far better value for money.

Depends on the quality of the recording but when it's done right it's pretty mindblowing. You have 180 degrees of vision, so you can look directly to the left, right, up or down, and see what's essentially an entire real environment in front of you and it really does seem like there's people RIGHT there. It's so real that you tend to try to move out of the way of boobies and butts and whatnot. Very visceral and unexpectedly so.

The video sizes are huge though. 10-14 gigs per video for a 45-minute film.

Photogrammetry is pretty cool, although I only looked at the Valve Demos for that.
Not strictly VR related, but I've been thinking about using real light as an illumination source for 3d scenes. A bunch of photocells and some arduino, a flashlight, some kind of library that bundles the information nicely, send it to unity and bam.
Might be interesting in conjunction with VR.

This is just a last ditch attempt to sell stock units until they sell a cheaper version next year. It is also a stop-gap measure to stop japvr and chinkvr in flooding this niche of a market. well good luck with that, embedded systems are interesting as well.
Want to learn how to develop for ARM with CMSIS library, haven't started properly but I thought I'd give a simple home automation project a shot.
Just measuring power draw of individual/cluster of devices with custom PCB with data transmitted via wifi to a server connected to router. The data would be accessed by clients connected to the local network.
Already dabbled a bit with C/C++ and SQLite on some other small hobby projects and done some PCB design before, hopefully I'll be able to pull it off.
VR related projects sound far more interesting though.
