In story telling, you don't want to deviate from a norm unless you are dealing with a story that specifically revolves around that deviation. If you do that, it creates expectation, and failing to deliver on that expecation leaves the person experiencing the story feel empty.

To put it differently, you don't want to just make someone gay if it's just going to be a casual mention with no payoff, because even just mentioning it in an offhand way creates an expectation that isn't going to be met, leading to lack of fulfillment.
