I can't play on prince because I can't build an economy AND maintain a military if I want to play not crazy military.
>>
>>383881727
The key is diplomacy. Give non-homicidal civs random shit you won't miss for free, then take out defensive pacts with them. If you have an excess of useless shit, give it to the homicidal civ, and become their friend.
Or jew the ever-loving shit out of the universe, buy some city-states, and pass shit like the standing army tax.
Or set up shop on an island. The AI does not like islands.
>>
military is so annoying late game. trying to manage dozens of units in multiple theaters just to get those capitals when you basically won.

frustrating shit. is it better in civ 6?

>>

On many maps you can use the terrain to your advantage to defeat a numerically superior force, especially against the relatively simple AI.
Hold them in chokepoints while you bombard them with arrows. Stand on forests and hills for the defensive bonus and force them into floodplains and marshes where the get a defensive penalty. Pull back to your cities and focus only on their melee units that can actually capture them. Once you've done that, you can usually just finish off the ranged units without any pressure of losing a city.
>>
>>383883351
we had this when playing multi, the solution was to use dx9 version instead on dx10 exe

>>
>>383882385
If you start very close to a hostile civ, just reload.
Build walls. Build friendships. Give shit like 1 GP per turn, or random horses, or luxury resources you have multiple of to the homicidal dickwad closest to you for free. Odds are solid that when they decide to wreck someone's shit, it will either be another military civ who stuck their thumb up their ass, or some other pussy-ass civ that isn't giving them shit, and they thus hate slightly more.
On that note, establish a trade route with them. That also improves relations.
Build a few more military units than you otherwise might, and don't waste them. Fuck, if you want, park them in the city that made them and ignore them until you can upgrade them. Your military strength will go up, and if it comes down to a coin flip between kicking in your teeth or Ghandi's, those extra few points from your lazy-ass warriors Ghandi didn't build may be the deciding factor for the dickhead.
Try to get archers early. Early military units have a hard time bringing down cities, especially if they have ranged support. If you can thin his dudes out enough, you might be able to even score some scratch by having your scouts pillage his shit until he gives up.
Don't steal tech from the aggro civs. It pisses them off, and honestly, odds are good they don't have much better than you.
If a civ not usually prone to aggression gets ahead too much in technology, absolutely steal from them. The only reason they are likely to try stomping you is because their Great War infantry shit all over your musketeers. Bridge that gap ASAP.
Don't make a bunch of declarations of protection for city-states, especially if you know there isn't anything you can do when the Mongols show up.
Make friends. You should give them names. let's call them Patsy. Is Shaka knocking at the door? Tell your friend, Lord Patsy that they should go to war with Shaka! That buys you time while Shaka's economy is occupied.

>>383883701
This. The AI only considers # of units when calculating military strength. You can kill their whole army with 1 well-placed machine gunner but they'll be on a single 1pop city messaging you like "haha! I have the upper hand, your demise is imminent!" if they have 5 units and you have 4.

Also link related for Immortal/Diety difficulties.

>>383882385
just build enough units as a deterrent
>>
>>383881976
Plenty of routes to particular Civ will prevent them from attacking, but that's just among other things. If you keep one archer around, then trade routes won't save you either.

>>383881727
By building cities in defensive spots, and thanks to AI combat abilities, it's not that hard not to die. I don't have very good winning % on Diety, but I almost never lose by being conquered.

Play as Egypt in a 1v1 Tiny map.
Make it your goal to practice killing the other guy before turn 100.
Once you do this, up the difficulty one and go again.

Also even if you're going for a culture, military, diplo victory you ALWAYS need a strong science core. National College is a must, going for Great Library is possible on anything under Immortal/Diety too. Remember the best tile upgrade for nearly any situation is a Trade post. Save up some policies and go for +science from Trade Posts and universities.

>>
>>383884561
Also unless you're venice make sure you always have 3-4 cities by turn 100. If you're going Tall this will do you fine for the game. If you're going wide keep expanding with 4pop (capped) cities and only build a market/library in them before making them generate gold.
ICS (city spam) was nerfed slightly with one of the expansions but still performs well with some certain civs. Mayans come to mind because of their Shrine.

If you're on an ocean map never underestimate Privateer spam.

Pick this when you are playing as Aztecs to farm sweet culture, or have Unlimited Barbarian experience mod. Anything lower than that doesn't even qualify as a game. You can just do whatever and still win, or build every wonder in the game.

On Deity, your first building is a shrine and you don't build wonders.

I really don't get who you're trying to impress. In the early game you should focus on building cities and improving tiles while having like 2 archers and 1 warrior. That's pretty hard to do if you have barbarian horsemen and hand axes coming from every direction

>no buildings or wonders because you're spending all your production to troops

I'm not saying it isn't manageable but it makes the early game pretty frustrating.
