The animations in the scenes don't animate much

Persona 3 desperately needs the upgrade treatment. It wouldn't fix the fundamental issues. Tartarus would still suck ass. But I would love a P3 game with updated gameplay, updated difficulty to compliment that gameplay, and EXP Share. That EXP Share is the big one. Because partners will drop out of full moon missions, it kinda makes it hard to want to train with anybody other than Yukari, Akihiko, and Aigis.

FeMC route better explores the bond of the SEES members, it is a bit easier to get all of your S. Links completed, and you have somewhat cooler combat animations. You also get a fairly powerful late-game (not endgame) armor in the enhanced maid outfit. Notably, it also makes Yukari a more likable character.
However, it leaves out a few characters from the standard S. Links, doesn't connect to any of the other content for this game, and some say conflicts slightly with the mood of the game.

Some people say that picking FeMC nudges the game's atmosphere a few ticks over to Persona 4. Whether that is a good or a bad thing is the sort of thing threads die for.

I played both, and honestly, I don't think you loose that much. Yes, The Answer is a big loss, but otherwise I think the small improvements here and there bought back my love for the stuff that got made shittier.
I'll also be the first person to say that not having to actually walk through places every time you want to buy something is actually a perk.

They are about equal. There are pros and cons for both. What typically makes people go FES is The Answer content, which Portable only has a few, optional bosses that are much harder, more puzzle-oriented versions of the Full Moon bosses ans an answer against.

Depends on what you want. P3P is turned into a point and click for everything outside the dungeon. FES has better atmosphere in my opinion. I'd start with FES and then play P3P the next time you play it maybe a few years later. That's how I did it and I don't regret it. P3P adds a bunch of stuff so it's definitely a good idea to play it second as you wouldn't be able to have the same experience with FES afterward.

Basically FES is the PS2 version of Persona 3 and it is called FES because it has costumes, the answer which is an extra bonus after you complete the journey and gives more backstory on the characters, and also on top of that does have the best version including cutscenes more things to do at night, and you can walk around etc.

P3P is the opposite it was released on PSP and was dumbed down where there is no cutscenes, not much costumes, writing is short and the ending was bad cgi. This was due to a time when PSP was worse than the PS1 with limited memory and storage. The only redeeming factor is it has a female character route. But even then it's worth it only after beating FES.
