Since we actually have some decent discussion going on in this thread, can we talk a little bit about the music in New Vegas?

We all know that the default radio songs weren't chosen randomly, and that all the songs are symbolically linked to either characters or themes in the game. Most of them are fairly obvious, like Ulysses being Johnny Guitar, but I've always been curious about Big Iron, specifically the identity of Texas Red.

The Arizona Ranger obviously refers to the NCR, and the "Big Iron" at his hip refers to the NCR-aligned Courier, the greatest weapon the NCR has in the Mohave. Texas Red isn't quite as clear. You might think maybe Texas Red refers to the Legion, since they're the greatest thread to the NCR in the Mohave, yet the Arizona Ranger is the aggressor in the song, and Texas Red has really done nothing wrong (he's claimed to be an "outlaw", yet all his kills are in self-defense). Obviously this isn't a strong parallel with the Legion, who are hardly passive and defensive, they're constantly on the attack. So who IS Texas Red? My only guess is that Texas Red refers to the Wastelanders or Tribals of the pre-NCR Mohave, who are getting pushed around by the NCR.

What do you guys think?

I mean, there is some decent writing in NV, but the links you're trying to create are a bit over the top.
Johnny Guitar is a song about a wild-west movie character and Big Iron is a very typical wild-west story about a lawbringer who challenges a lawbreaker and since he has the moral high-ground, ultimately wins.

The music fits the overall setting of the game.

Canon because none of them are allowed in Lucky 38, none of them have the privileges house entrusts you. I can see Courier with maybe ED-E or rex but no humanoid companion. Also Courier started alone so why would he subject himself to a chain of having to candy someone's ass around all day?

The fact that New Vegas used a lot of the original ambient Fallout tracks is a big part of why it felt so much more Fallout than 3 did.
Gold Slouch (the Redding track) is probably my favourite piece of ambient music ever.

That could just mean the first few men were people who he had an argument or disagreement with and they decided to settle it with a duel, the rest being Rangers trying to take him in, not that Texas Red is some innocent dindu nuffin who was only killing in self defense. It's supposed to be the Legion, I believe.
