honest to god opinion on this game?

i really like the music and the feeling of going on a big ol' adeventure when i played it when i was 7

krystal made my peepee hard
>>
>>383878772
it was alright, but it shouldn't have been a star fox game
>>
>>383878772
Good game that has a really rushed final act.
>>
I really want to fuck wolf
>>
It was okay but really should've been its own IP.
>>
Coukd have been great but never getting a chance to fuck up general scales still irks me
>>
Poor 3D Zelda clone with annoying characters and worse combat, and I don't have a very high opinion of 3D Zelda to begin with.

It's almost like it was a completely different game prior to Nintendo butchering it to hell and back and then sold the company that made it along with their IPs.
>>
It's not very good.

Being clear, I don't give a fuck about Star Fox, Zelda, or Rare games but i've played most of them bc well they're alright but not anything special.

It's just a zelda clone with really bad worldbuilding and a terrible story, even by collectathon standards. Making it worse, it's way too easy.

I feel like IF it was left alone and development time wasn't wasted by manipulating it into a Star Fox title, a lot of that could have been fixed.
>>
>>383878772
I thought it was alright as a kid, but now thinking back, it seems kind of boring.
The environments still seem neat.

I'm hesitant to replay it, for I fear that it will just be a huge cringe feast.
>>
>>383878772
I was more into starfox for the rail shooting than the furries, so changing the core gameplay to an adventure game gave me little reason to still be interested in it.

Looks and runs extremely well for such an early GC game. I'm still impressed by the visuals and general smoothness of gameplay. Fox is really well animated and the game runs at 60fps, which goes a long way to make it feel fluid. Just running around in Adventures is a whole lot smoother than Zelda games even to this day. Fox sort of leans into turns and has a slight acceleration/deceleration to his movement, instead of that slight stiffness you find it Zelda games.
Combat looks great, but it's really shallow once you realise that one combo is clearly superior to the others. The one where Fox spins the staff and then charges it up does 3/4 heart of more damage than the others, but it still takes two combos to kill any enemy. Luckily, you can do roll attacks and rolling to the side and swiping deals 1/4th of a heart in damage, making the spin combo followed by a roll swipe the optimal and fastest way to kill enemies. Once you figured this out, that's all you do unless you want to include staff magic, but why would you? The fire blaster does a lot of damage really fast, but it's inconsistent in stunning the foe. They seem to be able to start blocking in the middle of a barrage, which makes no sense.
The item use is really fucking excellent and shits all over any Zelda game at the time and all the way up to Skyward Sword. Not ever having to pause the game to equip items makes everything way smoother and even if you can only have one item shortcut, it's way faster and more convenient than Zelda games.
Soundtrack is fucking fantastic too. There are some really amazing tunes in this game. Voice acting was okay for its time, but the writing is a bit cringe worthy at times. Similar to Conker's Bad Fur Day, but without the self-awareness and not taking itself so seriously.
Story isn't anything special. It gets the job done. Definitely comes across as rushed or incomplete towards the end especially. Takes about 8 or 9 hours to complete. Pretty solid. Shame it's a Starfox title.
>>
>>383880324
>does 3/4 heart of more damage than the others
Whoops. Meant to say it does 3/4 of a heart. Wording got a bit fucked up.
>>
>>383878772

Stellar game held back by a rubber-banding button-mashing segment. Other than that and the obviously rushed final hours it was a game I loved as a kid.

Nintendo letting Rare's IPs get away from them was the worst thing they've ever done. Now Microsoft sits on the throne of corpses.

Lust penis.
>>
>>383880586

Realistically Nintendo would've had them shelved much earlier, especially fucking Conker.

At the very least I think Banjo-Kazooie would have been around for much longer, and we wouldn't have gotten the huge disappointment that was Nuts & Bolts.
>>
I loved it, but then I grew up and realized it's not really that good outside of, like, the town area.
>>
>>383880903
>and we wouldn't have gotten the huge disappointment that was Nuts & Bolts.
Probably not true. MicroSoft wasn't behind N&B. Rare were. It was their decision, since they wanted to make something new and exciting.

>>383881000
Even if that were the case, I think Nintendo's somewhat fairer than most companies in terms of second chances for franchises. Banjo-Kazooie was heavily recognized among the great Nintendo mascots back in the day, and would have appeared in Smash 64 if they had more time.
>>
>>383881000
Yeah, but when they moved to Microsoft a bunch of Rare's employees ran off. Some of them at least formed Free Radical and gave us the TimeSplitters series, which was much better than Nuts and Scrotes.
>>
>>383880903

If they were in the mood to hop on Rare's turf they would've made a follow-up to Donkey Kong 64 on the Gamecube. Nintendo made the express decision to let Rare have their IPs since even Nintendo themselves were stretched too thin to realistically make use of them.
>>
>>383878772
It was a decent game, I don't regret playing it but would not recommend the game to a friend, probably won't replay it either. Not a very memorable game, only a handful of places and events come to mind.
Combat wasn't terrible but I wish fox had some of his other tools in addition to the staff. I know the game addresses this right out of the gate but I still think it would have given the combat more flavor.
Game was also pretty ugly, although a lot of gamecube era games suffer from this.
Fuck the mashing QTE with the dino. Need a modded controller for that shit. All of the minigames were easy except that one, and for literally no reason and also out of nowhere.

Fans of the series that liked the game for the furbait will be satisfied, but fans of the gameplay will find this game is the first game leading to the fall of the starfox franchise.
>>
Test of Fear was bretty cool
Cloudrunner Fortress was cool

Fuel Cells are STUPID

I liked the graphics.
>>
>>383881364
Fuel cells were probably the dumbest fucking collectible I have ever seen in a Rare game. They did fucking nothing. Sure, you needed a certain amount to beat the game, but they were pretty damn easy to find. There was absolutely no reason to go out of your way to find those hidden ones. You'd think they'd reward exploration with some actually useful stuff like more hearts, magic or something, but the fuel cells were awful rewards.

Thought it was alright, should never have been a Star Fox game. I imagine that it would've been liked a lot more if it was Crystal rescuing some other animal waifu character and then later revealed to be in the same universe as the Star Fox games and nothing more than potential cameo food.

The game looks absolutely gorgeous. One of the best looking games on the GameCube and considering that it's technically an N64 port, that's quite impressive how much they managed to polish it up.
I can't really put my finger on it, but there's something about the environments in certain Rare games that give off this very particular mood. It's probably a personal thing, but in conker, Jet Force Gemini and Starfox Adventures there are these certain areas that all seem similar in tone that really resonate with me. It can't really be explained so it's hard to point it out, but in Conker it's the very first area you start in, in Jet Force Gemini it's the fortress looking area of Tawfret and Starfox has the passage leading from Thorntail Hollow to Cape Claw.
They're all really quiet and somber and have this autumny feel. Comfy as fuck.
>>
>>383882123
>Starfox has the passage leading from Thorntail Hollow to Cape Claw.
>They're all really quiet and somber and have this autumny feel. Comfy as fuck.

I love that area, despite only being about 40 meters from TH to CC it's laid out so you feel like you've travelled a long way. Moreso than that "Durr walk into a cave and end up on the moon somehow"

I also liked how you had to use Shrek to go up the big mountain but you eventually end up back in the Hollow. Loved that shit.
>>
executive meddling ruined it

the parts that are good are pretty good but after a certain point the game is just awful.

Moon Mountain Pass was the worst fucking area in the game. There is literally nothing there save for one Krazoa shrine and in order to get to it you have to go through the boring bullshit ''Place the rocks in the hole'' puzzle garbage.
But, the worst, the absolute worst, are these things. These fucking enemies are the worst designs in the entire game. Fuck them so hard.
>In order to even do damage you need the earthquake ability
>Needs to be charged up
>Likely to get hit once for free while charging
>After performed the enemy will spin around
>Gotta hit the weak point in the back
>Can only get one hit in
Fucking awful, awful enemy. Takes too long and almost guarantees you'll take damage since the earthquake is so fucking slow. I hate this shit. I hate this area.

Don't care if the game ended up disappointing. The nostalgia value is off the chart.
>>
It's a 3D Zelda clone with Starfox characters. The furries into Krystal are insufferable fucks.
>>
>>383882884
I've found out why this was so hard for people. The guy just goes super saiyan after a while. During the first like five to ten seconds, you can tap the A button maybe twice a second and still go even, but afterwards it's nearly impossible to win. Unless you're mashing right off the bat, you can't make a comeback. You really need to beat him as early as possible. It's not hard, but I think most people didn't really try their hardest right away thinking they could save their strength or something.

After Canary Mary I just don't trust Rare button mashers anymore.
>>
>>383883621
The game really shows just how utterly fucking rushed out the door it is in the final act of the game. The day after it released Rare was handed over to Microsoft.
>>
>>383880324

>60fps

No fucking way, I just realized that is true. One of the best looking gamecube games, has a mostly seamless world, AND it runs at 60 fps? What kind of hocus pocus shit is this?

You seriously never, ever noticed?
Motions were ALWAYS smooth.
>>
>>383884170

I recall now that the motions were smooth but it's been years since I've even replayed it, and it was before I ever paid attention to framerates.
>>
>>383884084
I never realized until emulating it years later.
>>
How many kids lives did the game ruin turning them into furries?
>>
>>383881191
Free Radical was formed 3-4 years before Rare was sold, buddy. The guys who left Rare to make FR simply did so because they wanted to make shooters while Rare execs wanted to make platformers.
>>
I liked it. I was young when I played it and I liked it.

It's not the hardest game and not the most original or fresh, but it did what it did well and I had fun.
>>
>>383883503
he rubber bands just like canary mary, the trick isnt to mash early, the trick is to tap slowly then mash hard later on

>>
>>383880260
That was easiest shit in the game, I let him nearly push me into the pit and then pushed him back to him nearly falling in, then let him push back just for shits and giggles and to laugh at what a pussy he was.

The test of fear though? I'll give you that one was difficult
>>
It was the first game I purposefully dropped.

Holy shit that screenshot looks really good.

Like, a resolution bump, it could look like a current gen title.

Pity Microsoft raped rare to death.

>>383886696
The resolution is alright, but aspect ratio is wrong and the fur shading on Fox's tail and ears are fucked up.
The game can look really good for an early GC game.
>>
Did you guys play this game as kids, or as adults? Near release, or afterwards?
>>
>>383888186
I played it when it was still new, but never really finished it until college like a decade later and was on a big gamecube kick.
>>
>>383882794
Oh man I forgot all about this horrible level. The rest was pretty great though, save for the final boss.
>>
Its a decent game that looked really good when it first game out.
Anyone who says the game is bad and automatically writes it off simply because "its not traditional starfox" is an idiotic hypocrite because had it stayed as Dinosaur Planet it would have been praised to high heavens as another masterpiece game from Rare and would be consided a mandatory classic to this day.
People completely let branding ruin things for them that they miss out on some really good stuff.
>>
>>383880903
I like nuts n bolts, but I understand the people that wanted traditional banjo. Unfortunately rare is dead now and we won't get anything worthwhile from them anymore
>>
>>383888186
I was a teenager, 15. Got it fairly close to its release.
>>
>>383878772

I like it and I would have completely ignored it if it weren't a StarFox game.
>>
>>383878772
I remember there was a part in the game fairly early on, where you're in the snow, and possibly just competed in a race of some sort. The sun is rising and it just looks comfy af
>>
Too much backtracking and the 3rd Act of the game was clearly rushed following the Microsoft buyout considering the General Scales boss fight is straight up missing.
>>
it spawned that flash porn game so it'll forever hold a special place in my heart
