the final "empty" area consists of two stairs that are there to establish that you're entering the ruins of castlevania, why would you parrot AVGN without even having played the game. The mansions are easy to navigate too. The real problem with that game is that the original adaptation is awful to the point of making the game unfinishable, but the original japanese game + manual were pretty clear in regards of what you had to do and the modern retranslation fixes that issue for english audiences too.
It was one of the first games to go a bit deeper in establishing mood and atmosphere too, when you get near Castlevania / castle dracula you can even find a small town made up of crazy people who have basically been ravaged by the curse, with no church and nothing else in it. Without stuff like that you wouldn't have all the crazy details in games like SotN at all.
Don't get me wrong, I prefer 1 and 3 also, but 2 has its place in history and it shouldn't be forever judged by a fucking joke review

Honestly if you're looking for a CV game with not quite so shitty environments, try out LoI. The hub world helps and the levels didn't seem as overly long to me.

But yeah you really should give CoD another shot, I just watched the Netflix show tonight with a friend and he was talking about how much fun he had with the game. The crummy levels are literally the worst part.

Yeah, I can applaud the game for trying new stuff, but I think many things were poorly planned and implemented. Like I said, I don't hate the game, but it could be tweaked and improved in so many ways.

And I've heard about it, but I haven't actually played it. Maybe I'll check it out sometime, thanks.
>>
>>383879383
No, I don't buy it. Castlevania had a connected environment (hardly a new thing even then) and a day and night cycle (which was never even used in the series again).

People act like it layed the groundwork for metroidvanias, but it doesn't really look like it did at all. The CV series going forward only really referenced the game on a surface level.

Too few people played those games. But the time system was really, really bizarre in that game. I'm pretty sure there was a CV64 speedrun at SGDQ this year too, so that's more exposure at least.

>>383879890
I think awful is way too harsh. Outside of the horrendous music and sound mixing, and some lackluster dialogue, I think the show was really quite entertaining. Plus it set up for a great season two.

You're right. I only hate it because i'm a bishop in the catholic church and it makes me too self-aware to enjoy raping altarboys.

>>
>>383879795
IGA said that Metroid and Zelda inspired the creation of SotN, I've never actually heard CV2 mentioned. Cool if it was though.
>>
>>383879697
I never said it directly laid the groundwork for metroidvanias though, I said it was an interesting experimental game that also happened to be one of the first attempt at establishing mood in a somewhat deeper way in gaming history, it has a lot of nice detail put into it for a NES game and if played with a comprehensible translation it's pretty fun to take notes of all the clues and figure out how to navigate the world and everything. Again, the japanese version + its manual are definetly possible to figure out, while the original american version isn't, but that's no fault of the game. I would argue that the original zelda is a lot more cryptic than CV2, yet it had a better localization both in-game and in the instruction manual that made it a lot more accessible.
Again I prefer 1 and 3 but 2 doesen't deserve all the shit it got just because of a joke review.
>>383879710
I wasn't the PoR guy from the other thread, I just got upset in this one because I fucking hate this professional debate attitude from nu-/v/, and the one line long shitposts that are just meant to make you look cool on an anonymous imageboard. It's the roughest of the three ds games. Still fun though and I love the whips in this. Fantastic soundtrack and great bosses.

I was pretty bothered with how poor the castle was. I also felt that the game's potential as a sequel to Bloodlines was largely wasted.

And even though they were all in a bonus area, recycling all those DoS bosses was brazen as fuck.

Every level barring skeleton cave is used twice. OoE was when Konami was trying literally everything to make Castlevania sell in Japan and in the west. Even though the games were critically received well, the sales were floundering (especially in Japan, hence all the weeb pandering in AoS-PoR). I think we're lucky to have gotten OoE before the whole series went to shit in LoS.

OoE was a pretty darn good game and I believe the art style wasn't to blame for the sales. It was a pretty darn good style and while not as iconic as Kojima's it was also great in its own right.
My dream Castlevania would be something with Kojima's art as promotional art and Hirooka's art as sprite art (kinda like Vanillaware games). It would be pretty good.

I think one of the major issues with OoE was really DS pirating, it was too easy, too good and had already spread like wildfire, much more than than any other portable (aside from the PSP, maybe). I'm glad that Igavania left on a good note before LoS happened.

1999 would basically be like playing a regular game starting at lvl 255 with all abilities. From the way the story is told Julius was in fucking god mode all the time.

>>383886103
>Just needed some better level design.
I remember them wanting to step out of the regular castle design, hence why you have the world map kind of thing. I think that it shows some lack of experience when it comes to outdoors design, not in terms of looks but in terms of how to make it look "natural" yet retain the design level they are used to make.

In the Castle they can just whip up whatever they want but you can tell that they tried to make the outside areas somewhat closer to the natural realm of things, even though some still have bullshit elements, which I don't mind at all.

>>383886074
Oh... That's too bad. I mean, not bad, just not what I was expecting.
>>
>>383886508
Yeah, that's the problem. He's just too fucking hax, it would either be a let down or nonstop EZ mode to play as him. I guess they could do some cool stuff with all the side characters helping up. With an increase to the budget of these games, who knows? Could have been amazing. But instead, we got Lords of Shadow.

>1999 would basically be like playing a regular game starting at lvl 255 with all abilities. From the way the story is told Julius was in fucking god mode all the time.

Not to mention it's Dracula's final battle, too. He'd have to be pulling out all the stops. And the army gets involved as well.

I don't think Konami would be able to pull it off as it is now, too dangerous and fans are not in the mood for being displeased, it's a touchy title. Maybe if someone made a fan game, people tend to accept those much better than actual releases because they somehow excuse certain flaws and don't see it as an actual fixed release in the series.
I just want to forget that LoS exists, specially because Metroid II is coming out and the guys who did LoS are touching it.

>>383886684
It's ok, it was good while it lasted. Thank you.

>>383886694
If more games came out from the same team I guess we would start to see more variety in the environment and design. I believe it was really a question of experience. One good example of this was how they treated the water levels outside the castle since they had more freedom to work with them like they usually do inside the castle.
The boat from Bloodstained also shows some of that design, although I have yet to see the full map design I believe they are keeping the same general idea they had with OoE.
>>
>>383886769

>the castle itself spreads out to try and consume the surrounding area

Here's hoping Bloodstained is good, wasn't impressed by the boat boss but the blood vampire chick looks like a fun fight.

This would be a good excuse to mix the outside environment with the castle design and would give the team the freedom they need to work on level design. It's an idea that offers progressive level design as you get closer to the castle and could offer many possibilities in terms of exploration and overall fucking around with areas however you want. It's Dracula, ain't gotta explain shit more than that.

>>383886103
After looking at this again I find myself wanting a remake of CotM. Just with a better card swapping system (shoulder buttons for scrolling maybe) and better animations. And a shop, because that game fucking needs a shop.

>>383887064
Boat boss is supposed to be the first I think. It's natural if it's simple. still it could have also been a demo boss that will be revamped later on.
My biggest fear with Bloodstained it how some animations look really slow. When a dev goes for 3D in the initial stages everything ends up being too slow because of the full body motions and animation frames, something that you don't have to care about when you work with 2D.
The art style is weird, I have mixed feelings about it but will reserve those for the final release.

Regarding MS.. it's just a general worry. Castlevania was slaughtered, Metroid was slaughtered, came back to life and now is partially in the hands of those who slaughtered Castlevania. I fear they might give them more freedom in the future.
While Other M was a failure overall, I would still like to see some parts of it return. PARTS OF IT. I give credit where credit is due and I believe that some things did go right. Shame they were few. Just don't grab the bad parts, please.
>>
>>383887590

>>
>>383888454
They are very good at toying with the illusion idea so even a setting akin to how Persona 5 handles the changes to dungeons would be acceptable. They have the right tools to work with it just feels like they need help with how to make them work together. But who am I to say I'm right? This is simply wishful thinking. Craving even.
