Yeah.. that's about right.
Happened right in the middle of the recession. Something like 50 game studios closed down worldwide and the indie spam era started.

Handhelds were fantastic that gen but otherwise yeah. 2017 has been a better year for consoles than any year from that gen save maybe 2007.

The Wii, 360, PS3, DS, and PSP all had lots of exclusives, compelling games, and massive libraries.
>9th gen has been dogshit
Wii U flopped hard but had some (like 6ish) really good games. PS4 has just about as many worthwhile exclusives as the Wii U, but also has lots of multiplats. Xbone has multiplats. Switch has Wii U games.

None of the 9th gen consoles will ever have libraries as substantial as any of the gens before them and it feels bad.

Because it takes billions of dollars and an extreme amount of risk just to put out safe games with the level of polygon counts that we've come to expect. We really don't need new generations, we need a handbrake on games technology until the level of fidelity we come to expect isn't prohibitively expensive or risky to put out.

Golden age:
