Which Spyro game is the best?

Spyro 1 has more flaws than 2.

but it's still my favorite in the series

I've just finished playing the first but I think this series is probably a 2 > 1 > 3
3 seems like its full of shitty gimmicks and 1 is really slow at the start
I know nothing about the second one, so it could be complete shit
>>
>>383853132
I swear Spyro games have the best overworlds in video games.

Except maybe the original Mario Galaxy.

2. It improved upon everything in 1.

I liked 3 but there were too many gimmicks like having levels with other characters playable.

I personally prefer 1 these days. Simply because I don't think the various minigames are very much fun these days. I'm sure 3 was the shit when I was a kid though and it still has nostalgic value to me when I play it. Never played the second one back then, only played it like a year ago for the first time so I'm a bit biased here, but I liked it the least out of them. Felt the level design was pretty weak. Might have to play it again some time because now I don't remember a whole lot of it
>>
>>383853132
We'll determine this in a year when Sony releases a Spyro HD collection and all the fans complain that they "fucked it up" but really, they're just realizing that these games always sucked.

Only one 5th gen, 3D platformer made it out alive. That's Mario 64. The rest blow.

Play Ratchet and Clank or Jack and Daxter. Non-Nintendo companies figured it out in the 6th gen.

Not him but I'm also curious how come people like Spyro 2 so much. It has nearly as many minigames as the third and the levels aren't as nice as in the first
>>
>>383856483
As someone whose never played the originals, what makes them better?
Bigger environments?
Better Framerate?
More gems?
More platforming?
More breaths?
If it's nostalgia blinding you, then it's nostalgia blinding me.

I'm playing Spyro 3 Greatest Hits Edition and aside from cumming buckets in Evening Lake I'm just not feeling it.

But Fireworks Factory and Enchanted Towers were both God Tier.
>>
Because big open-ended levels with shit to collect, enemies were fun to kill and the controls/camera were solid af.

In Crash it's a project to jump over a single pit because the controls are shit. Mario 64 feels like you're walking on rollerskates. Spieroo got it right from the get-go.

What is everyone's opinion on this? I think its actually pretty good, nothing like the PS1 trilogy but its still pretty fun
>>
>>383856696
In my opinion 2 has the prettiest looking levels but the fallback comes with their design and gem placements being weaker. 2's minigames were still abundant but not as frustrating as the 3rds were for me. 3 went back to good level design but the minigames detracted a lot from it.
My overall ranking for them would be 1>2>3
>>
Is this the best track in the series https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwqxLW9138g
>>
Spyro 1: everything you do ingame originates from your own thirst for adventure and the unknown, you are always in control, in a world with set rules, failure means dying

Spyro 2: fetch quests dictated by npcs become the main meat of the game, you are no longer in complete control of what you do, failure means not doing what npcs want, or just dying

Spyro 3: WARPED (actually more varied than Crash, props)

>Bigger environments?

Actually, as I recall, the levels in ETD are far bigger than the originals. They're just uninspired and poorly designed trash with really nothing to do in them. They just feel like big empty spaces, and the gems/challenges are spaced so far apart that it feels like padding.

>Better Framerate?

God yes. The framerate in ETD is absolutely awful and experiences massive and constant slowdown even on actual hardware.

>More gems?

The amount of gems don't really have too much to do with why the originals are better, but I will say that ETD has only 9 levels. Compare that to the 20 or so levels in each of the original games.

>More platforming?

The platforming in ETD is awful, thanks to the awful controls and poor level design. On top of that it's just plain boring. There's only one or two actually challenging platforming bits, and they're marred by the controls.

>More breaths?

ETD has absolutely shit breath powerups. There's literally no point to them other than to collect dragonflies with the bubbles, and a few one off puzzles for the others. You will literally never use any of the other breaths outside of their required uses.

Other than that, the graphics/artstyle is shit, charging enemies isn't satisfying, all of the minigame gimmick bullshit challenges feel slapped together in an afternoon with no inspiration, the game is glitchy as fuck (you can literally beat the game in 5 minutes), and on top of that the music is rather boring and not memorable at all. Which is odd because Stewart Copeland still did the music for that game. Maybe the shittiness of the game got to him while he was composing.

It's not nostalgia. ETD is genuinely one of the worst, most broken games I've ever played.
>>
>>383857272
Yeah as far as newer Spyros go it was surprisingly really fun for what it is. I'd have to go back and give it another try though as I haven't played it since it came out

Don't fall for the Greatest Hits is bad meme. Spyro 3's actually has bugfixes and more music tracks whether the original release had the beta track playlist from where the songs weren't ready yet so they just recycled stuff. Except the songs were there, just unused.
>>
theyre all pretty bad

>>383858017
Curiosity's sake, how does 2 control better than 3? They seemed about the same to me.
Pretty much agreed otherwise, though I liked 3's music more.

Tbh, it doesn't. I just stated that because Spyro 2 is where they got the controls right. Spyro 3 controls exactly the same.

If there was a new Spyro game, how would you expand on the concept? They stopped making Spyro games after the third because they couldn't think of what more to do with it so they moved to Ratchet and Clank

I'd just like to see the Spyro 1 style expanded on, more verticality and I guess more demanding platforming sections. I just like the core concept of gliding around and using those boost pads for stuff, Tall Trees is great

I never played the PS1 ones, too late for me to go back to them now I think.

PS2, Enter the Dragonfly is absolute garbage. Horrible load times, boring, shitty levels. First time game developer, they never made anything else.

I liked Hero's Tail a lot. Legend of Spyro series was fun too, but kinda meandered towards the end. I've played the first few Skylanders games and liked them.

I guess my answer is A Hero's Tail.
>>
>>383859276
>I never played the PS1 ones, too late for me to go back to them now I think.

It's not. They've aged beautifully. 1 maybe a bit less so than 2 or 3, but still very playable and enjoyable. Do yourself a favor and play them. You won't regret it.
>>
>>383859131
I agree if you forget where the birds are it can take forever finding them but I just enjoy everything about that level. The theme, the music, the awkward flying mechanics, idk it just does it for me.

This pretty much, though I still think there's merit in the style of 2 and 3. 2 is still my overall favourite but I feel like a mix of 1 and 2 would be best. Minigames are fine if they aren't the only thing off the beaten path in a level like in 3. Spyro 1 style exploration with the side content and minigame balance of 2 sounds best to me. I enjoyed 1 and 2 both a lot and was hoping 3 would take the best of both and expand on it but it was really more of the same. If we got a trilogy remaster then a proper sequel, it could be something spectacular.
>>
>>383854040

2 has NPCs similar to 3 but doesn't have any other playable characters. Less gimmicks than 3.
