I didn't know about the prerelease hype so I had a pretty decent time with it. 7/10 most of the time. 8/10 occasionally.

The fact that it was online only, and it lasted all of a few months was the massive depressing point. A fun Diablo clone with Spore's customization, nuked because EA didn't care about it.

Creature Stage gets you a huge amount of DNA. It's really fucking hard to kill one though, because Epics always have really strong attacks. The ones that can fly and spit are absolutely impossible to kill. In the Tribal stage, you get so much meat that you never run out of food.

It helps to have a team full of rogue creatures that can sort of tank it with their huge HP pools while you kite it around with ranged attacks and flying, that's how I did it back in the day.

I recently did it because I flew up on top of a hill that an Epic couldn't reach me from, and it didn't have spit. Took like 10~ minutes using level 5 spit, but I was watching scare pranks on youtube to pass the time. I can never bring myself to sacrifice Rogues though, they're so useful in the Tribal stage. Tons of eggs really fast, and never running out.

It might also help to just recruit a few of your own species if they have spit for the extra damage. Problem with that though is Spore's AI is retarded and they would still probably run up at it in melee range and die.
