I don't play any of the modern consoles so I wouldn't know how things are now, but I remember PS1/2 having fucking garbage dpads. Xbox is garbage too but most of their games don't even use it. I only remember nintendo consoles having good ones

I own a DS4 and use it all the time, the WiiU Pro controller and the Xbox One Elite dpads are way better. Speaking of the Xbx One Elite controller, have any of you fucks used that shit? I was incredibly leery at first but a buddy of mine owns one and it's super nice. Shit is way too expensive though.

Sony did indeed make the best D-Pad this gen but OP posted the wrong one. Having said that, the DS4 is better than previous DS D-Pads for sure. Playing Crash with it is doable, and I wish PS4 could get PS1 support so I could play Umihara Kawase Shun on it instead of with that abhorrent DS3 D-Pad.

Sony never made a good d-pad for home consoles, PSP was pretty bad too but holy shit was Vita d-pad amazing, I wish they used it for DS4.
Nintendo pretty much always had a d-pad except for 2 consoles.

I loved the face buttons too. I don't care too much for clicky vita-style buttons, I liked how the PSP was mushy and comfortable but you still felt the switch depress enought to reliably tell when your input registers. The analogue stick was the only weak part of the PSP, if they made a DS5 that had PSP dpad and buttons, but DS3 analogue sticks and 360-style triggers it'd be perfect IMO.

DS4 is a comfy controller but the dpad sucks. I tried to play Xrd with it out of curiosity, but there's next to no feedback on if you're on a diagonal or not. The PSP, for example, rested into the diagonal position so you could do charge inputs and diagonals accurately, but the pad was also large and padded enough that you can easily roll Z motions/720s if needed. DS4 is alright as a 4-way dpad but it fails under more use.

The sony style dpad is inherently flawed as rocking back and forth is harder when you section off the pad by incasing it in the controller. This also causes potential pinching in the spaces between the pad and the controller. Likewise it lacks any of the usefulness you could have in actual seperate buttons which would be worse for platformers and similar games but better for menus.

Basically its the worst of both worlds and sony only keeps this shitty model because of brand recognition and engineers who refuse to acknowledge a design flaw in the PS1.

I have. In fact I used to own a Wii U, including a Wii U Pro controller. It was on par with the DS Lite d-pad imo. It was solid, but something was a bit off. Nowhere near bad, I just never could warm up to it, despite hundreds of hours of playing.
Just like with my DS Lite, I played that thing for thousands upon thousands of hours, but the d-pad never really did it for me 100%.
I used to play PS1 at my friends'/cousins' places A LOT as a kid. The PS1 d-pad was fucking hand cancer. It literally gave me cramps it was so subhumanly shit. I was like "how the fuck can you make a video game console and design such an utterly subhuman trash controler WHY DO YOU PUNISH THE PLAYER FOR PLAYING?"
I bought a PS2 dirt cheap when the PS3 was already out so I could catch up with its vast library, the PS2 d-pad was almost just as shit but a tiny bit better.
I've got a PS3 in 2010 for Demon's Souls and although the d-pad was better than PS1's and PS2's it was still trash.
Like I said although I still down't own a PS4 I bought a DS4 for the sole purporse to have a controller for my PC and I couldn't be happier.
The d-pad is extremely haptic and responsive, especially for fighters. It has the right amount of weight and pressure and resistance to it that just makes it feel right.
I've been playing Nintendo since 1991 btw.
I can't say anything about Eksbaks, as I despise lardass Amerifatski trash and think video game consoles should remain Jap exclusive territory. Microsoft and Xbox have only brought cancer to video games. They can eat shit and die.

DS4 d-pad might be better than other sony d-pads but the XBone's Controller's and literally every single NIntendo controller's except the gamecube's destroys it by a long shot.
