I will admit that games overall look better today, especially on high end PC. HOWEVER, I will not deny that Crysis 1 still has the best vegetation physics I've ever seen. All games today use this crappy vertex shader to morph plants when you walk into them. You see it in RDR/GTA V, as well as a few others even including Z:BotW.

Nothing comes close to Crysis in this regard. Still the lushest jungles with the best interaction.

You ever play Far Cry 2? While the game obviously doesn't look nearly as good as crysis graphically, the physics of the vegetation made the jungles in that game the most impressive I've ever seen, to the point where a static screenshot or compressed video wouldn't do them justice.
The way every leaf and branch shifts around as the wind blows through them during a storm is leagues above anything Crysis has to offer
>>
>>383820552
I did, but I don't believe you've played Crysis when you think Far Cry 2 did that aspect better.

The best moving vegetation any game even this gen can do is using displacement maps, whereas Crysis had some kind of bone animation going on for every leaf.
>>
>>383820791
Nah I've played both
To each their own I guess. The jungles seemed a little static to me, apart from when you directly interacted with them ofc. But then again there weren't any levels with strong winds apart from the battleship one
And I do remember that each branch of every tree moved separately with wind in Far Cry 2, and even vines hanging from trees swayed properly iirc, so it definitely wasn't a simple vertex shader or anything like that.

This, this is all I want. Why the fuck is it so hard to ask that massive leafy branches are able to fold and move properly? Crysis did it in 2007 with fucking ancient hardware. There's no excuse why game's use awful vertex shaders to morph vegetation.

Here's a video of it because this shit is beyond words. It needs to be seen in motion to understand and appreciate. Once you see it demonstrated like this, then you go back to any newer game and realize how fucking pathetic shit is today.

It's vanilla.

>>383822806
Nah I also remember this being fucking legit. All of the foliage including the actual palm trees can also react to wind and explosions but as someone else said, for some reason they didn't show it off much on the wind side of things.
>>
>>383820068
I love how they developed technology and wrote entire papers on foliage simulation just to get the setting right, from rustling leaves to being able to break palm trees at specific points.
You could freaking split a palm tree into little segments, which you could then pick up and throw.
Modern games may look super detailed, but environments are so static and uninteractive outside of the key, linear points where you're meant to do things.
>>
>>383822859
The worst part is that since the current consoles have shit CPUs, we won't be seeing this until the 9th generation if it ever happens.

Though I wonder if it's possible to do vegetation physics on the GPU considering their decent power.

I loved Crysis, but there is one thing that stops me from replaying it.

It doesn't have RAGDOLL.

Indeed, the homosexual anti-violence laws in Germany forced Crytek to remove ragdoll and bullet holes from the bodies. And if there's one thing that pisses me off in the world, it's this shit.

I remember seeing a video of a mod that added gore and ragdoll to Crysis... but I can't find it anymore.

that's because it was optimized for older hardware, older cpus in particular. we can easily get prettier games these days if they utilize modern cores.

I really love games with old and rusty weapons. No scopes, no red dot sights, no silencers, etc. Only old and rusty gear.

The African setting of the game was nice, and beautiful. But...

The repetitiveness of the game was WAY too much for me. What's so fun in constantly getting spammed by groups of people in cars and mounted guns... like every what, 2-3 minutes?

You could literally just turn your head around after clearing a checkpoint, and a new group of people would respawn.

That classical Ubisoft shit killed the game for me, even if the guns were cool, and even if the African landscapes were great.

I just got done replaying it and...I love it. Did when it first came out, and still do now. Though I realise it IS heavily flawed, but there's some great fun to be had, sneaking through outposts slicing people with a machete, the way that as you progress, the mercenaries become more and more afraid of you, and the Heart of Darkness/Apocalypse Now vibe of the story. Plus, I still discovered new things, such as enemies picking up wounded soldiers and carrying them to safety, so you can snipe a guy in the leg and use him as bait. And again, pretty mature story for a Far Cry game

It was maxing it at 1080p with AA that was hard, and a lot of people didn't do that in 2007, people could max it in lower resolutions, or play it very close to max.

The game was easy to max by 2009, they're just exaggerating

Crysis was made for DX10 which wasn't available at the time so we were stuck running it in DX9 mode.
>>
>>383836047
Yes nigger, Crysis was exactly that. A fucking benchmark for future machines.
It wasn't alone; back in the day, many games were unable to run decently on max settings at release (think about Deus Ex or Doom 3).

It wasn't because they were "unoptimized" (not like today at least); good games were expected to offer something for future playthroughs.

They can't do it today anymore, or people like you would sperg out
>>
>>383837012
There was barely any difference. When I played the game 7 years ago there was some bug in the DX10 executable that always crashed the game during the final battle against the ship. I had to use the DX9 exe and it looked the same.

Doom 3 isn't really, BAD foresay. It's just that the developers had a similar problem to Serious Sam 3; slow early to midgame progression that generally devolves into shooting the same enemies with the same guns room after room, often with the exact same "imp in a closet" attempt at a jumpscare for 3/4ths of the fucking game. By the time it really picks up in the last part of Mars and Hell, you're well-armed and the game's throwing Commandos and Arch-Viles at you and it finally gets better.

That's a pretty big sin for an FPs that isn't inherently a horror game, really.

>>383842445

Most people see the opposite. The 'open world' is more of a small, linear sandbox playground that encourages players to use the gear in the areas and their suit powers for all sorts of ways to approach various situations. But its story-linear structure and preventing itself from falling into a genuine open world slog keeps it interesting and laser-focused on being a shooter first and foremost. It's the kind of style people wish games like Metal Gear Solid V would've gone for.

It's a damn shame that the games that followed kind of sterilized the gameplay to try to hit more mainstream appeal with the console markets, and yet didn't quite reach the same style. I mean, Crysis 1 isn't perfect, god fuck those aliens, but the sequels kind of squandered everything.

The problem with those games is their failure to utilize more than one core, and since games have become multi-core focused, single threaded performance in modern cpu's has been pushed aside since multi-core performance offers better utilization than single core in games. Also this was during a time when single core cpu's were starting to hit a wall.

The statement "it was optimized for older hardware, older cpu's in particular" is flat wrong.

Personally, I do not feel video games have advanced graphically since early 7th gen. Texture resolution have improved, there are shaders now, some better animations, but developers have lost the art of doing more with less. Late 6th gen titles still impress me graphically to this day with what they deliberately set out to do by pushing technology. Modern devs could easily match their scope, but don't because the challenge isn't there anymore. Games become insipid, visually, technically, competitively.
