Adventure 1, which is sad because it isn't even a good game. Just that it's Sonic stages occasionally try to actually make actual use of 3D space with sections like Speed Highway. SA2 onwards are almost entirely rectangular corridors floating over a death pit that relentlessly copypastes geometry and setpieces in order to pad out the length. Every fucking 3D Sonic game past SA1 has only doubled down on SA1s issues (excessive automation, prioritizing hollow spectacle over replayability and nuanced movement, padding itself with gimmicks and alternate gameplay styles) and left any potential it could have had to rot.

There's more enjoyment to be had from Sonic 06, but Sonic Boom Wii U is the better put-together package. At the very least the voice acting feels professional.

My personal favorite 3D Sonic is Adventure 2, flaws and all.

I know I'm going to be flayed alive for this, but I actually really loved (and still do today) Shadow the Hedgehog (the game, the character is too try-hard edgy). I liked the level design, the special weapons were fun and quirky, and the Hero/Dark system was fun (for me at least). I loved the music, and just the overall handling.

I mean, I was 16 when it came out, and it was my first 3D Sonic game, so youth, nostalgia, and lack of experience could all have something to do with my enjoyment of it, but I still have my Xbox set up, and I still go back to play it.
