Should Square Enix leave FFXV as the final mainline entry and make the FFVII Remake as a tribute to what once was, and then leave the IP alone and move on to newer IP's and greener pastures?
Or should Squeenix keep making entry after entry, scrounging every last shekel from the series' name recognition and milk it's popularity beyond any redeemable dignity?

If anything VII seems to be shaping up to be a bastardization of what it once was, not a tribute.
At this point? Screw it, milk it until it's completely dead. If nothing else it provides comedic value. Hell, personally the poor quality of the iOS/Steam remakes of V and VI actually hurt a lot more than the festival of bad jokes that is XV.

Thanks to the 21st century, enjoy your stay.
There's a good reason Final Fantasy is considered the single most pleb-tier JRPG to ever come to this world.
The only thing going for these games has been the massive budget for longer than you've been alive.
