Mario is nothing compared to pre-patch Bayo though. Even post-patch Bayo is miles above Mario in terms of cheap combos and guaranteed follow-ups.
Mario's dthrow utilt shit only works at very low %, buy Bayo can confirm into KO off of less.

You can do so much dope shit in Smash 4, but you rarely ever see it happen, because very little of it are actually true combos.
Had they only added a little more hitstun to attacks there would be room for a more developed combo game, but they completely squandered it. I don't understand. Combos in Smash are so intuitive that anyone can perform some kind of combo. Why take it away?

The thing is, hitstun isn't really the issue. The multiplier for it has actually remained the same since Melee.
It's just Sakurai introduced a bunch of mechanics and changes to the way characters are balanced that generally reduced combos. Brawl gave you the ability to literally airdodge straight out of hitstun and tumble. Smash 4 removed the former but retained the latter, which is why combos are more frequent than in Brawl but not as much as in Melee.
But it's also the fact that general frame data has been slowed down across the board, making it harder for characters to combo when they're still stuck in their attack animations. Said attacks also cause much more knockback than in previous games which again makes it hard to follow up.

Whatever the case, I don't understand the philosophy behind it. Comboing in Melee was mostly difficult due to L-cancelling requiring some nimble fingers, but Smash 4 has none of that. It's way, way easier to get follow-ups but none of them seem to work properly, leading into these pseudo-combos or heavy air dodge reading. It's just weird.

The philosophy behind it is balanced. Smash 4 is a significantly more balanced game than melee is. Give 4 melee air dodges and ledges and Bayonetta becomes way more busted that make Fox ever was. It means less because consistent shitters like Bowser have the odds more stacked in his favor. His combo game will never be able to compete, and neither will his off the page game. So Sakurai just made those aspects of the game less important.
