my problem is that sometimes there's some cool stuff to get from doing sidequests but becomes available so late in the game/in postgame it's practically useless

That's a good thing. Too often I get caught up trying to complete all the side content before progressing and burn out before ever actually completing the game

What's worse is when side content is locked out if you p4ogress too far in the main story.

I think doing side quests in nier made the story quests super easy

I tend to do that in open world/RPG type games. Get distracted doing collectables and side quests and by the time I start the main quest I'm massively overleveled with endgame tier armour

saints row 2 and 3 did this

saints row 3 did it worse because they tried to pass off minigames as story content while saints row 2 accepted them as side content
