SWG, City of Heroes, City of Villains, WoW, Warhammer Online, Age of Conan and likely the majority of MMOs released between 2003 and 2012. Always had a soft spot for SWG though, the profession system was really enjoyable and I thought it did a good job of including the social aspect with things like hanging out at the cantina to regain your stats and buying new weapons and armor from other players' shops.

In terms of other MMOs I've played, swtor and gw2 are the only others I've put a couple hundred hours in. both fairly mediocre, but enjoyable in their own way.

I played FF11, SWG, and EVE. Of those 3 I guess EVE gave me the longest lasting true "massive" feeling, and despite CCP massively failing to have it live up to its potential the core was gold if you were good at it (I stopped playing a few years back so I don't know about now). But I mean fuck, if we're talking about "companies dropping the ball/wasting potential" then it's not like EVE is remotely unique amongst those 3 games, FF11 & SWG both got fucked badly.

In EVE though still exists my greatest hopes for a someday MMO revival, not in terms of something superficial like spaceships or the exact details per se, but in terms of:
1. Actually "massive", not just regular MP or even SP with a fancy lobby. One universe, no split bullshit.

2. No LE_WOW_KILLAH_XD pretentions whatsoever. EVE was always niche, but profitable, and fine with that. It was fine that it was making decent money and had something unique. Economics is a universal rule in this world, and no matter what if something is aimed to conquer the world, thus costing an utter boatload of dosh, then of course it needs a boatload of consumers, and in turn has to be generic and casual as fuck. What MMOs need is LOTS of "EVEs" as in MMOs that all do something unique, have their own settings, and are profitable & aimed more at the 50-500k sub range.

3. They were ambitious. There was a time when MMOs were fresh and each one was full of ambition to push the limits. Sometimes that failed of course, or they aimed high but couldn't quite make it work. But god damn they tried. Remember, EVE was 2003-era. That kind of wild ambition and experimentation seems to have stagnated now though.

So yeah, there's my pick even though the bullshit was a real shame.

I Only really played Mu.
The only thing I cared about was farming for a good-looking set, completing the main quest and exploring the maps. So I played it pretty much like I'd play a singleplayer game.
I guess the genre doesn't really appeal to me.

The only one I really played a lot of was Ragnarok Online. I wasn't aware of what an MMO was when my cousin introduced it to me so it just completely blew my mind at the time.

I went back to it earlier this year and played it a bit before I got sick and sold all of my semi-rare drops and cards for 1z each in Prontera.

Atlantica Online and Granado Espada were the games that I stuck to as a teenager.
They felt unique in a shitty era of WoW clones like Runes of Magic and whatever that russian game was.
Used to play runescape with a friend until we got bored of it.

MMOs will revive when most jobs are automated away, $10-30/month for a chance to have some meaning and social recognition will seem like a good deal then to a lot of peoples.

Started with Guild Wars Prophecies, also played Factions, Nightfall and Eye of the North, then moved on to World of Warcraft. Got sick of it halfway into Ulduar and quit. Tried GW2 when it came out, played for about a year before I got sick of that shit because of all the cash shop nonsense and the constant removal of content. Then went to FFXIV, played until HW got to level 55 and fucked off to try and improve myself in real life, girlfriend screwed me so now I'm back to FFXIV because everything other game is dead and whatever on life yo.

I played Ragnarok, WoW and Realm of the Mad God

Ragnarok was pretty good, my only problem is 0.1% bullshit drops but when I played I had the time for that
WoW I just played because my friends played too
ROTMG was really fun in the early versions but it went to shit

Private RO server my friend ran, then Guild Wars, then WoW, then GW2, then WoW, then Wildstar, then FFXIV, then nothing, then back to WoW and FFXIV again because life likes to constantly shit all over me so I might as well just shut myself off to the world.

Played Archeage a bit, quit.
Played Guild Wars 2 a lot, liked it, got to endgame, didn't like how there was nowhere to truly advance your character (epics are just cosmetic? please)
Played BDO, loved the combat, found out the endgame was nonexistant (for pve anyway), quit.
There's quite a bit more but that's off the top of my head.
Looking forward to Pantheon now.

I have played CoX, LOTRO, SWG Post NGE (really wasn't that bad), a very small amount of WOW, TERA, Secret world, DCUO, Champions online, Age of conan, Pirates of the burning sea, EQ2 and probably several more I can't even remember.

City of heroes was my first and it still is the best. I actually get legitimately sad some days knowing it's gone forever. I fucking despise NCSoft. Hope SKorea gets fucking nuked.

The problem with a statement like that is that you forget 2 points:

1. You get more exp the higher level you are
2. You don't need max level to have gained an advantage

RS was the best. I don't even know why, I guess the progression and the questing was just very immersive and organic and there was stuff to do as soon as you started the game that wasn't questing (unlike WoW).
Guild Wars was a close second.

Runescape every time. I played the others. I played WoW, I played Guild Wars, I played Maplestory, but when I was young, Runescape was the king.

Sure, the combat was nothing to activate your neurons, but the quests and the freedom were what always kept me interested. My friends and i would play for hours after school helping each other with quests because the only resource at the time was half-finished.
The freedom to level whatever you wanted, to completely ignore most of the story until you wanted to unlock something. The amazing punishments for death, the fun minigames and the comfy non-combat leveling. It all came together to make something magical.
The quests are still some of the best in MMO history, and even the apprentice quests are better than the average endgame quest in other MMOs.
We need more MMOs like Runescape, but you can't ever capture that magic again. It was lightning in a bottle, and Jagex was smart to release OSRS to let people relive it.

Played a fair amount of WoW, though my favorite MMO is likely to be Ragnarok Online.

I've played and enjoyed both private servers and official servers and enjoyed both equally for different reasons.

I also really enjoy DFO even though it's an instanced-based beat em' up MMO as it's one of the few games that lets me be a robo summoner via Mechanic.

Ultima Online, Anarchy Online, WoW.
Ultima Online at its peak couldn't be beat if you valued community, roleplaying, and a game that's actually multiplayer rather than every group getting their own private instance of everything.
The MMORPG genre died long ago.

Eve is as complex as you make it and ages like the finest wine. Over the years itll end the best game you play. You can learn too many real life applications in terms of manipualting people, making deals, and learning how to play markets.

LOTRO, SWTOR, FFXIV

LOTRO has been and will always be my favorite as long as pic related isn't involved. No LOTR game has ever portrayed Middle-earth (as it was in the books) as faithfully as LOTRO has, and the fact that when LOTRO finally shuts down no game will capture that faithfulness again saddens me greatly.
