As someone who loves the series (and story until Chrono Phantasma onwards) I can say that it's basically just budget guilty gear -- it was made because Guilty Gear was in copyright hell because of a Sammy/Sega deal with GG arcade machines iirc, so BlazBlue was made for the hell of it while people were waiting for a new GG game.

Storywise it's neat and has interesting concepts and character interaction but past CS, the story falls off with literal fucking Mary Sues trying to steal the spotlight, asspull villains, and established dead villains coming back to life constantly for stupid reasons like really loving the main character, or really wanting to be hated by everyone.

It's a fucking trainwreck, but a charming one.
