abyss and vesperia are considered the best ones
they make great introductions into the series but raise the bar a bit high for other games
symphonia is one of the most basic tales games but also serves as a good introduction
If you only have a ps3, Graces f or Xillia would be a good start but Graces f has a slow beginning and shitty story but has pretty good, challenging combat, Xillia is the modern basic tales game
If you have a ps4 or pc, I recommend Berseria if you just wanna catch up on the most recent game

also none of the games are connected, they're all in different worlds with the exception of some games that are direct sequels such as Xillia and Xillia 2
