Lets have a nice and relaxing rpg thread.

>Is Torment worth it if you get it for cheap and have a lot of spare time?
>Does the combat in Bastard Bonds get more interesting later on? Active skills, etc?
>Will Pathfinder rpg be any good?
>What is wrong with people who prefer the campaign of the first nwn to the campaign of nvn 2?
>>
Playing Might and Magic now because I got blueballed by Grimoire.
What are other RPGs like this besides MM and Wizardry?
>>
>>383722079
>No Bastard Bonds 2 with deeper combat mechanics, RPG elements, and diving into hardcore porn for both homogaybutts and straight dudes that want to see Conan the barbarian raping women
IT HURTS MY HEART
>>
>>383722340
Legend of Grimrock is nice and i have heard good things about The Quest. Never gotten all that into this subgenre of rpgs to be honest. Should probably give some of the classics an honest chance.
>>
>>383722079
I recently had an itch for CRPGs and bought

Icewind Dale - amazing all over again
Shadowrun Returns - eh
Shadowrun Dragonfall - awesome
Planescape Torment - slow but iconic
Caves of Qud - hooked on this weird shit
>>
I just got the Gothic trilogy and Arx Fatalis are there any mods I need before I start playing?
>>
>>383722698
CoQ's really goddamn good. I think my absolute favorite thing about it, and I love the shit out of the game, is the pace of advancement both for your character and for finding new equipment. You level up reasonably well and every level feels useful, and you find better gear almost constantly and can find the occasional out of level piece to give yourself a good edge for a while.

I played Gothic 2 without any mods and i had a good time. I think that there are mods to upgrade the visuals but i didn't bother with them. I remember playing Arx Fatalis using something called arx libertatis but i don't know how essential it is.
>>
I am fucking hype for that pathfinder game I'll admit i'm an RPG casual and never heard of pathfinder before it but controlling your own kingdom sounds very cool

Eye of the Beholder

Cheers anons. Been trying Gothic 1 but it kept crashing. Got any starting tips?
>>

Learn the controls, they might seem shit at first but once you learn them you will have no problems doing anything.
I recommend Alternate Controls option so you have SOME mouse functionality instead of none.

Playing divinity. I wanna get into a good crpg. Will monitor thread

>can go back and play primitive 3d japanese games like metal gear solid 1 and ocarina of time no worries
>try and play morrowind multiple times and the graphics are what gets to me the most

why is this
>>
>>383724806
Morrowind is a mesh, technically and control-wise. It have a lot of nice things, but some pillars are weak
>>
>>383724806
MGS and Ocarina of Time have good art design despite being technically simple.
Morrowind is shit on both fronts
>>
Any hidden gem turn-based CRPG's that you guys would recommend?

Something like Fallout 2 would be cool.

Already played Underrail and Wasteland 2.
>>
>>383724806
Low-poli+rich high res textures is the retro uncanny valley which many old western games suffer of, old 3d japanese games don't have really complex or high res textures so there's more visual coherency overall, it's a simple visual dissonance, like playing all those modern low poli games with modern lightning techs, you can feel something's off but it's a bit difficult to pinpoint what is that bothers you.

Arcanum. Made by daddy Tim Cain

Geneforge, Avernum, Avadon.

These aren't 'hidden' by any means, /v/ just has no taste. All games in all series have demos.

>CYOA style text options in a gameplay focused RPG is the equivalent of quicktime events to an action game. There's often a contradiction in design for RPGs where they give players an immense amount of tools and ways of completing tasks, but then in a conversation or cinematic players are often shoehorned into a situation where they can only access a fraction of those tools in story contextual ways.

How does magic work in Bastard Bonds? Equipping a bow turn left click into firing an arrow so do i have to find a healing wand to heal and etc?
>>
>>383728218
>time
>can limit quest resolution options
Instantly dropped.
>>
What are some other RPGs like Elona or TES where you can level every skill if you want?
I like being able to do everything and have plenty of tactical options.
>>
Is this a crpg only thread?
>>
>>383728648
SaGa series, it's also the precursor of TES' levelling if that might interest you.
>>
>>383728218
I disagree. Quicktime Events in action games are simply a cinematic view of what you do in the game (fighting) and its only significance is often whether or not you get to continue the game. CYOA style text options often cover events not related to the core gameplay (talking, climbing, reparing, etc) and are often used to branch out the narrative. Are not all conversations in rpgs an example of cyoa style text options covering something that the core gameplay does not handle?
>>
>>383728218
Not really, text and story should be an option.

But as an example, look at Fallout 1, you could easily beat that game without ever really talking to people, it would just be hard and you would get lost, most speech encounters you can tell someone to fuck off and engage combat with them or simply walk away.

As long as there are no essential story triggers tied to the speech systems, and the speech systems require your characters to learn context (Such as having knowledge in certain skills) then speech systems are fine.

The problem is when RPGs become more cinematic story telling experiences, rather then open gameplay systems with story and background to immerse you in the games world.
>>
is deus ex mankind divided too normie/high budget to discuss here
>>
>>383729939
Deus Ex 1 or get out.
>>
>>383729939
Neither, but too notrpg.
>>
Interested, just how bullshit do you guys like your games? Do you think things like instant death moves and being unable to continue a playthrough due to a bad build are fair? I'm pretty mixed on them myself but interested what you guys think.
>>
>>383729007
I honestly don't know, then i don't know how i would define a crpg. There seems to be an unspoken fellowship between people who like fallout, baldurs gate and etc with people who like dungeon crawlers but i am not sure if people who like hack and slash rpgs would feel welcome.
>>
>>383730029
fuck you guys, I'm not getting drawn into "rpg only means things I like" autism
>>
>>383722079
Monster's Den Godfall just came out recently and it scratches a particular itch thats hard for me to reach with a lot of other games with clearing shitters out of dungeons and sorting through their bits for shinies

Needs a little polishing even if it's just Chronicles with a new coat of pain from back when flash games weren't all copy paste clash of clans garbage
>>
>>383730220
i played mankind divided using my brothers steam account. Somehow i managed to overwrite my local files with his cloud saves when i was 10 hours into the game.Guess i will never complete that game.
>>
>>383722079
I was replaying pillars of eternity but my computer died
Not a huge fan of the base game but supposedly the expensions are better
>>
>>383725362
The Avernum series is p. good
>>
>>383730190
Well I hate to be that guy but I guess since it seems OP meant "rpg" in general...

I finally started a SMT, I picked the typical first with nocturne. I'm 10 hours in and really loving it. The press turn system is pretty interesting and I feel makes combat a bit more involving in terms of thinking about your team and actions. The story is there but I appreciate how limited it is, I'm genuinely interested when something comes up and it never feels overbearing. Art and soundtrack are great as well. Difficulty feels nice, bosses woukd kill me a few times and it was fun figuring out a strategy.

Hoping the other games are as good as this one. I really have no complaints so far.

How to sell games. How people don't want RPGs, they want casualization.
>>
>>383731894
Sorry but never played a persona title myself, as I said this is my first SMT game.

From my understanding the persona games are more "anime" inspired, take that as you will. The highschool setting, lower difficulty, and greater focus on story are what seems to separate them from the mainline SMT games. This is just my understanding though.

Persona focuses more on story and characters and you can date people, where as mainline SMT has focuses more on gameplay.

Persona has you have Party members that are static as in they can't use different personas whereas the MC can use different personas and can switch them during battle. SMT has you use demons as your party members you encounter in battles that you can recruit.

Persona 3 and up uses a 1 more system which gives a character another turn as much as possible as long as there's another enemy they can exploit their weakness against. Hitting an enemy with a weakness downs them, and if you down all of the enemies you can perform an all-out attack which is an almighty attack that does massive damage to all enemies. SMT 3 and beyond uses turn presses.
