On my first playthrough I went to Megaton, and now I just skip to Vault 112 because the first half of the quest is kind of pointless

Turn right and run in a straight line until I hit the boundary. The I follow it up north until I hit that boundary. Then back west, then down south, until I get back to where I originally hit the wall.It's relatively safe and opens up a ton of the map before you even start.

Or I just go straight to Rivet City for the bobblehead. Having 20 skillpoints starting at level 1 is pretty nice.
