A tight development schedule. They may have used the excuse of people leaking the cutscenes online, but the real reason is they had to develop 50 characters and 2 individual games at the same time. Something had to give, and the cutscene-heavy adventure mode was the easiest to axe.

Now, that's not to say Smash Tour is a good replacement. Really, they should've made Smash Run for both systems, just with different areas (Smash Run on WiiU would've been an online mode, perhaps). But I guess even that would've had its own set of problems (making hi-def models of the enemies, for one).

tl;dr Too much to make for 2 games at the same time.
