Do you believe that the Arena FPS genre would not have faded away if they had stuck to the idea of launching a game annually a la EA Sports as was Atari's original idea?
>>
It died because they were to hard for casuals, who would soon became the majority of people who pay for video games.
>>
>>383695749

you can play this game competitive or not
>>
>>383695536
UT2K4 was made due to the harsh criticism that UT2K3 received though.
>>
>>383695536
no because modding and making maps was a big part of the community.
what we really needed was unreal championship on pc
>>
>>383696334

of course ut2004 was a tinkering of ut2003

also, the "harsh criticism" came from the 99 retards
>>
>>383695536
I think it was that Arena Shooters were never the multi million playerbase games we think they were, its just that they sold enough to make money, but rising development costs made them unable to compete.

I don't even know how much stuff like UT99 or Q3 even sold, its apparently not important enough to be listed anywhere.
>>
>>383696881

the original doom had 20 million players worldwide in 1995 (though 80% were playing pirated copies)
>>
>>383695749
That's what Unreal Championship was for.

They died because death in natural for genres with a high skill ceiling that are actually built to last. It's the same as RTS where people are still playing Starcraft like 15 years later. There's a lot to master.

Compare this to modern online shooters that have planned obsolescence baked into the design. Shit like the new Star Wars Battlefront is literally designed to be played for X number of hours, then you go and buy the new one that comes out two years later
>>
>>383695536

>RESPAWNERS
>F.L.A.G.S.

ut3 was a mistake
>>
Arena FPS, like RTS and other PC-centered genres, was killed by rampant piracy. Survivors rely on gimmicks to survive, such as F2P format, six gorillion DLC, draconian DRM and focus on multiplayer.
>>
>>383696703

it still is, sheez, they even open sourced the engine
>>
>>383696881

Someone has to have paid for these series to have this engine embedded into the gaming industry like an irremovable cancer

Arena FPS isn't dead its just no longer trendy and only played by people interested in the genre. I can get a game going in any Quake right now.

2004 was the last truly good year in gaming.

why? explaine yourself?
>>
>>383697695
UE3 was the perfect engine at the perfect moment.
>>
>>383699442
It doesn't he's retarded. It's better balanced than the rest, supports custom maps and mutators, and lets you walljump indefinitely.

>unreal championship on pc
Don't you mean Unreal Championship 2? UC1 was just UT2K3 for Xbox
>>
>>383699637
I know it doesn't. Just wanted to hear his reasons.
>>
>>383700059
was uc2 the one with melee combat? then that one of course
>>
>>383699637
>>383700224

that's why it has tons of players, because it's a great balanced game not pointed to casuals (that not wants to play this genre)
>>
>>383699228
t. somebody who never played quake.
>>
>>383699442

well, seems it has lag coded on purpose into the engine, to start saying something

Aren't arena FPS games making a comeback this year??

We have Lawbreakers coming out next month, Quake Champions is in beta and is supposed to release this year, and also Reflex is a one that is currently out.

There's also that new Unreal Tournament.
>>
>>383702770
new unreal tournamet has been coming for like 2 years now.
Reflex still has max 40 unique players per week.
Quake champions is still unplayable buggy and doesn't even have proper duel.
I don't know what lawbreakers is and I'm pretty sure nobody cares about it.
>>
>>383702770

>reflex

loled out loud

it's not even called reflex anymore, it's reflex arena, this and toxikk can't put together 100 players between the two

lawbreakers is another ow clone, and we already have overwatch
>>
>>383702770
>Lawbreakers
It's an overwatch clone, although class roles aren't as set in stone.

>Quake Champions
Terrible, but the only one that will actually get popular, if Zenimax advertises it hard enough.

>Reflex
Zero advertising. Doesn't matter how good it is, you have to sell to casuals for it to get anywhere.

>Unreal Tournament
Forever in alpha. Also no people playing.

A question for you guys. What's the best shooter to play on PC atm that isn't Overwatch?

I'm in the mood for one but OW got boring for me and I stopped playing it months ago.
>>
>>383703812

Siege, I think.
>>
>>383701348
I'm playing Quake right now bitch. You can even get duels in Doom 3.
>>
>>383703812
Depends on what you're looking into. If it's arena FPS your best bet is Quake Live or joining a discord for a more niche one like CPMA or Reflex.
>>
>>383703812

there is none, seriously, you want numbers?, go to battlefield, cod or overwatch

I enjoyed titanfall 2 but the mp is barely alive, like with nudoom

quake champions is in beta, the same as unreal tournament (I don't like this game, there is something inherently wrong with it)
>>
>>383704084
Well Call of Duty is my favorite shooter. Laugh at me all you want but I'm glad that they went with WW2 this time. I'm gonna purchase that but that's months away.

So out of Quake Live and Siege, Quake appeals to me way more. I don't like how siege is played. I prefer more solo type play where you can just run and gun people.

Is Quake Live active enough to warrant a purchase?
>>
>>383704393
It's the most active arena shooter on the market at the moment maybe excluding QC which has lots of technical problems. There are free alternatives you could try as well before taking the plunge like free easy installers for Quakeworld, Quake 2, and CPMA (quake 3 promode). You could check those out before buying QL to see if you like the genre. You can download them here >>>/vg/182280691
Quake 2 and CPMA are the most active outside of Quake Live but you can still get duels in Quakeworld. For stuff outside of duels with CPMA they're usually organized by discord but you can join in anways.
>>
>>383704857
also i feel like i should warn you that quakeworld is probably the most brutal arena FPS to get into for newcomers with you easily going 0-64 against someone more experienced than you
>>
>>383705315

I feel like this cod player is going to have the same "getting shit on" experience whether he plays QW, Q3 or QL.
>>
>>383706195
you don't understand how much more you will get shit on in QW compared to 3 until you get spawnfragged 10 times in a row by someone who knows the map like the back of their hand
>>
>>383695536
What happened with UT2004 was that UT3 was released too early because Epic wanted to promote the next unreal engine. It dealt a fatal blow to the UT2004 community and nothing was gained in exchange as UT3 was kinda ass and died quickly. It was a dumb move at a time when the shooter market was in a transitional period due to 7th gen consoles.
>>
>>383705315
>>383706195
Ehh I'll think about playing one of those.

I also play Fighting Games so I'm used to getting shit on.
>>
>>383707783
QL probably has the most newbies and casual friendly gamemodes like freezetag.
