They've since already raised this target twice now after seeing just how big the demand for the Switch is.
Nintendo makes profit off of the Switch and a ton of money off of all the software sales, due to people mainly buying Nintendo consoles for the Nintendo exclusives.

I'm not counting lifetime because Nintendo generations are too unpredictable. WiiU "lived" for 4 years and was literally killed the DAY of Switch's releaes, since BotW will be its last game ever.
On the other hand 3DS came out in 2011 and is arguably doing even better than the Switch when it comes to game releases this year, it'll still be supported in 2018 for sure. That's a 7 year gen.
Even Sony is unpredictable but in a good way. PS3 is still getting support in 2017, 3 and a half years after PS4's release, with games like Persona5.

No one can really predict each console's true death, because the generations expand or shrink, and some systems are killed day1 and some live for 3+ years more than they should.
Which is why I used 2020 as the limit. For all we know PS4 can get hacked in 2019 and then get a massive bump to 140 million units and still sell a lot in 3rd world countries even after PS5's release.
