My Opinion

>Ubisoft ceo said that 93% of we pc gamers are pirates

>Steam took the remaining 7%
>>
It was the first online platform and it had sales to boot, along with the bonuses for developers like the ability to push updates the way steam does.
>>
>>383670496
>secret to their success?
the services that tried to compete with steam when it was weak (greensteam dark ages) failed utterly and completely.

gfwl was a category 5 shitstorm
uplay/ubi game launcher was a fucking trainwreck that didn't even work half the time
ea had a decent service (ea downloader) but they started origin which was a dumpster fire

now uplay and origin have both come a long way but its just too late. the steam community mentality is "no steam no buy" and valve capitalized on that on spades with their social media aspects and the community has permanently ensconced itself in steam.
>>
>>383670878
UPlay and Origin is still a steaming pile of shit. Was force to download it to play the games I had for free and the shit fucks up.
>>
>>383670496
Ubisoft also known as the people that shitalk pirates?
>game with pirates in the golden age of piracy
Dude lmao if you were so competent why didn't you get those 7%
>>
They acquired Counter-Strike and you don't have to pay to use their servers.
>>
>>383670496
>secret to their success?
Releasing games that require steam to play them
Once they gathered a big enough player base they started adding other developers games to their store, and they did this all before anyone else had the chance to, basically establishing an empire on digital videogame sales
>>
>>383670496
Piracy only gets you so far.
For example:
>Pirate Dark Souls
>Can't play online

Steam sales help. Though it seems they've gotten greedy and sales aren't as great as they once were.

Also its retarded how ubisoft and EA are trying to shove their platform down you throat when buying things through steam. I avoided buying some of their games due to that.
>>
>>383670496
Eh, it's easier than messing around with cracks and firewalls and installing updates manually etc. and it's cheap at least for a 1st worlder like me
>>
>>383671245
ahhhh the online meme

I prefer to go to the dentist for a root canal rather than multiplaying online

I am not even joking
>>
>>383670878
The reason we are "no steam no buy" is because steam just works and we don't want to install more platforms that slow our pcs down. It's just bad. They don't contribute anything at all except slowdown and annoyance.

I absolutely will not install origin or uplay for any game. It would have to be the literal god game to convince me. Like if Peter Molyneux and Will Wright joined forces to make the ultimate Sim Black And White Tycoon or some shit.
>>
>>383671245
valve doesn't set sale prices. steam sales suck because the haven't tried anything fun like summer adventure since. say what you want about uplay but at least doing the achievement/actions for points gets you actual discounts on video games.
>>
>>383671429
You are free to have opinion.

>>383670496
Sales. And regional pricing.
>>
It feels "safe", you know you can buy your games and they will work(most of the time), there's servers for every game, steam cloud, friends.

I'd prefer if you could just play without the Steam Overlay but whatever.

>>383671429

Good, now get out of this thread, you have nothing to do here.
>>
>>383671614
>servers for every game, steam cloud, friends

ahhh the cloud. This is the worst meme since Hitler.

The cloud is a technology that came 15 years late.

WHO THE FUCK NEEDS ONLINE HARD DISK WHEN A 1TB HARD DISK COSTS $50?

you know you can just turn it off right?

you guys are retards. OP only made this thread so he could post a joke about valve taking 7% of pc users
>>
>>383671807
7% OF PC GAMERS amount to thousands of people

compare that to the dozens of millions of console game customers
>>
>>383671701
what do you need 1tb drive for? savegame files are minuscule, a 16 or 32gb thumb drive will store a lifetime of savegames.
>>
>>383671807
>threads have to revolve 100% around what the OP posted
You must be new here
>>
>>383671701

Do you prefer copying your saves everytime you change computer? You can play on your desktop and if you really need to, continue your game on your laptop without dealing with any bullshit. I don't see why you won't like it, I kinda feel sour about it though, for some games it doesn't work quite right, and you can easily lose your progress, happened to me one with The Binding of Isaac, I was 1 item from getting the platinum god, then this guy started playing on my computer and shit steam wrote over my save file, I just stopped playing.

>>383671728

But it is still running in the background, there's no point in turning it off.

Getting Saints Row 2, Civilization 5 and Empire Total War have their physical copies install Steam anyway. Then they talked publishers into huge discounts to consolidate their online retailer monopoly.

That's how they got me, because I never expected any game company to stoop this low and didn't read the box properly.

how can a person be this stupid
>>
>>383670496
Just because you pirate doesn't mean you don't buy games.
I pirated X-com 2 and ended up buying it when it dropped in price.
>>
>>383670496
>people actually believe Ubisoft's lies abut piracy

Kek
>>
>>383670496
>93% of we pc gamers are pirates
I would like to know how this was derived
>>
>Kill the physical PC market by getting publishers to use steamworks DRM / keys
>Dominate the digital market through aggressive sales and a line up of platform exclusive games that people want
>Now that their the primary platform people don't want to shift as they'll lose everything they've invested into the Steam meme
The lack of a credible competitor until it was too late also helped them out. EA, Desura, Microsoft and GoG were almost entirely focused on small sections of the market while Steam was one of the few to have everything.
I despise Steam regardless. It's normalized so much bullshit from Early Access cancer to greenlit trash to loot boxes, paid sprays and paying full RRP for digital copies
