clumsy controls (no run button)
poor aiming mechanics
baby Mario
abysmal vehicular/ "powerup" (more like powerDOWN) sequences
piss easy bosses
boring minigames
repetitive gameplay
secrets aren't rewarding
condescending artstyle
dull, repetitive music

overall, doesn't hold up.
a superior platfomer is megaman x.

I know it wasn't what a lot of people wanted. But it's exactly what I wanted. I still play it. Sometimes I play with a friend who also knows the level so competition is fierce. It's like a longform Mario Party.

Shovel Knight

To be fair, SM64 gives this game a run for its money, but that race is close either way.

It can be a fail safe, but it's mostly used for precise long floats between platforms. A lot of the game's 100% goals can't be done without the flutter mechanic.

I agree desu sempai. It's truly the best 2d platformer ever made, the visuals, controls, bosess, music, everything is top tier.
>>
Sonic 3
>>
>>383671198

>tight controls
>fun but not too obscure secrets
>good collision detection
>not necessary, but catchy music
>fun powerups
>boss battles that are more then just floating head with giant hands trying to smash you
>>
>>
>>383671137
I completed the 100% a long while back. Was pretty annoyed that it counts your death count
I didn't know like a moron and gave the game to my friends who never played it before for a laugh.
>the itch to complete it again for true 100% will hurt forever
>>
>>383671198
A character that is fun to control regardless of level design.

A chance for player expression to use the character's abilities to complete challenges in their own way (which is why I have no love for I Wanna Be the Guy and other "platform hell" games that just ask you to mimic pixel perfect jumps)

And interesting level design of course but that's a given in every game
>>
>>383670675
then what genre is it then?
>>
>>383670430
The first game was perfect, the sequels all tried to emulate it poorly with the exception of Wooly World.
>>
>>383671356

adventure
>>
>>383671198
Forgiving but has difficulty

Consistent gameplay/ style

Doesn't make the player repeat a bunch of bullshit if they die (Lots of save points)

Interesting Mechanics (Not complex per se but interesting)

Good Music is a must

Good Plot is optional but good too
>>
>>383670084
But Yoshi's Story is literally an improved (If shortened) Yoshi's Island.
>>
>>383670430
The truth is that the sequels were just as terrible as the original game.
>>
>>383671302
Are power ups necessary? Good list otherwise.
What about modern 2D platformers? There are countless indie platformers being released that barely anyone buys. Does it need a good hook? Music? Defining art style and characters?
>>
>>383671363
Is Wooly World anywhere near as good as YI? I wasn't too impressed by the demo
>>
>>383671363
Plus they messed up the music so badly, the original has simple, but catchy tunes like mario while the other games are just forgettable at best.
>>
>>383670430
Their level design is garbage. Most of them feel like rehashes of levels from the first game but with a few instances of that game's gimmick thrown in at random.
>>
>>383671408

For the love of Miyamoto don't do the pixel retro style unless you KNOW what youre doing, not everyone can pull off Shovel Knight or Scott Pilgrim, just go with a style that suits the game well, whatever tone you're going for.
>>
>>383671414
It's cute and relaxing. I haven't completed it but it's a decent challenge for completionists.
It's almost better with a friend on 2P.
>>
>>383671492
Is it as boring as epic yarn? I liked it but I could never stand more than an hour with how slow it gets
>>
>>383671198
>Good controls
>Difficulty not based in trial-and-error, or managing shitty controls
>Levels with a good mix of archetypes
>Memorable gimmicks that come up more than once, but aren't repeated until you chew your tongue off
>Secrets
>Boss battles with interesting peculiarities
>No fucking flight
>If you are going to break the above, make it an end of game, intentionally broken ability for exploration
>>
>>383671341
What do you think of platformers like Ori where the player gains multiple powers over time? Do single mechanic platformers trump this?
Level design that incorporates everything a mechanic has is a must. I think Super Meat Boy provides a good example of this.
>>
>>383670430
A big thing for me is that the later games were so fucking slow paced in comparison, Yoshi's Island wasn't Sonic or some shit but Yoshi's Island DS or New Island and even Woolly World (although WW is one of the best since the original) feel so fucking slow from movement to how you shoot your Eggs, it's just dull. Also I'll always prefer the original art style, it was just so top-notch, Woolly World is also sexy though.
>>
>>383671486
I feel like the black and white silhouette style is also becoming over done. It makes the game blend in with the others which can break the sale drive of the game.

>>383671135
Prinny 2 is pretty good, and hard.
The gimmick of the series is fun though. You get 1000 lives, each one implied to be replacements for you, and get no bonus lives in a playthrough.
There is some trial-and-error bullshit, and you can unintentionally fuck yourself over if you happen to take the stages in an order that pits you against a hard-as-fuck boss, but overall the game is fun.
Prinny 1 is also okay, but has less tight controls.
>>
YI isn't my favorite, but I do respect what it did. I'd say I actually admire Yoshi's Story more for being less safe and going even further in the direction they were going with YI, making it completely based on fucking around instead of objectives.

Oh geez yeah that too

Also the whole "Trying to be subversive" gambit has been overdone to the point that I stay away from any game that looks like it has it. Jokes are only the funniest the first time.
>>
>>383671563
What about limited flight? Like a bar that goes down. I know Kirby can sometimes fail in level design because of this.
And what gives difficulty that isn't related to trial and error?
Secrets are always good. Aren't boss battles overdone?

personally prefer this over Yoshi's Island, both are great
>>
>>383671756
If the bosses are interesting, maybe not, but that depends on the audience, some people love bosses back to back and others love platforming.
>>
>>383671012
I still like Starring Goemon better than Great Adventure, but I still love both, one of my favorite series, shame to see what it's become.
>>
I adored Yoshis Island as a kid (probably because it was one of the only games easy enough that I could actually beat it), but I replayed it as an adult and it just isn't that good. The flutter jump and lack of death by collision makes the game an absolute cakewalk and instead of punishing you with death the game punishes you by annoying the shit out of you with baby mario.

Donkey Kong Country series (especially 2), Tropical Freeze, mario 3 and mario world are all a lot better 2D platformers. I'd even go as far as to say that sonic 3k is better.
>>
>>383671897
YI is one of the classic examples of "easy to beat, impossible to complete"

I agree that Yoshi's Island is a cakewalk, but when you try to get 100% that opinion changed in me pretty quickly.

That's the nice thing about it, kids who just want to have fun can beat it, and if they want the real challenge they can try to complete it.
>>
>>383671756
Limited flight can be okay, but only if it's more jump extension. It's a big problem if a game gives you flight, since it then has to resort to stage design that removes the advantage from you, or else make you take a self-imposed challenge to keep the game difficult. I'd say even Kirby 64 was a bit too much, since to put something out of Kirby's reach still required a fuckhuge cliff or hole.
"Trial and Error" difficulty is generally pixel perfect jumps, "lol you die here, better luck next time" moments, and generally other design decisions that require a player to act in a nonsensical manner out of the context of a player who already knew what the solution to a given problem was.
Bosses are overdone when they are boring "stomp its head after dodging 3 fireballs!" fests. If instead they are basically malevolent puzzles, or else have a memorable and unique gimmick/gameplay change they can actually enhance the experience.

>>

Okay no seriously. What the hell does "Codescending artstyle" mean?
>>
>>383670417
I mostly agree with this so if it is bait I'm going to be disappointed, but I find yoshi's island to be fucking boring and I don't know how I finished it as a kid
