Are mechanical keyboards a meme?
>>
>>383654012
Your existence is a meme
>>
>>383654012
Your post is way too vague. Do they make you better at video games? No. Are they fun to type on and use? Sure, I think so.
>>
Mechanical is better than rubber dome, but there is diminishing returns on the money that is being spent. A mechanical keyboard might cost 5x what rubber dome keyboard costs but only is 2x as good an experience to use.

If you're looking to buy mechanical keyboard for the first time I strongly recommend you go to a store in person that has keyboards on display that you can use. The different switch types make a big difference, some people may prefer X switch and other people will prefer Y switch.

I like my mechanical keyboard, here's a kinda old picture
I haven't cleaned it though, some of the keys are crunchy when I press them
>>
>>383654479

>I strongly recommend you go to a store in person that has keyboards on display that you can use.

I would second this, but it's pretty damn hard to find a store that actually has stuff on display to touch beyond Razer's proprietary switches and Corsairs with reds.

As for whether or not they make you any better, they don't, they just make using your computer more comfortable. I use a Ducky Shine One with blues and it feels great to work on.
>>
>>383654012
They won't hurt your fingers if you choose blacks.

Blues have that loud 'click' that tells you your key stroke is registered, you choose this keyboard if you really need to type alot.

Blacks and browns have a 'cushiony' feel with alot more resistance when you're pressing, and has no click. Decent for games.
>>
>>383654479
I don't think there are any stores around me that even sell mechanical keyboards. Not that I dislike the keyboard I have now, but I wish I would have had the option to actually test some out before I made a purchase.
>>
>>383654662
Christ, that is truly sickening. Clean your fucking key caps and toss out those dirt mats on the table
>>
>>383654012

They are not meme enough. Optical switches will be the next meme.
>>
>>383654012
do you need one to become a pro gaymur? No

are they great for the most part? Yes
>>
I don't think they make a person better at gaming but they feel x10 better to type on than a rubber dome. The only down sides is the boards to sit up a little higher and that might bother some people if they like a lower profile sort of keyboard. They also make way more noise than a rubber dome.

The main issue is all the different key switch options. I have a bunch of different boards with everything from reds to a vintage IBM. My fav is MX-red, it's like typing on air but some find the light touch annoying. Being if you have lazy habits or rest your hands on the board too much you get ddddddddddddddddddddddddddd sort of key presses it's so light.

blues are cool but make a shit ton of noise. Blacks require what feels like 50+ pound per a press to work. I think that's why so many just get browns for their first board.

if you can test out the switches some where that's the way to go.. plus boards have come down a ton in price for cherry knock off sort of boards. Well under $100 in a lot of cases. Used boards from good brands are also well under $100 now.
>>
>>383654012
They're unnecessary for gaming
Great for typing though
>>
>>383654012
They feel okay, but even when I'm the one using it, the fucking clicking sound is goddamn annoying. I prefer the silent ones. No reason for that obnoxious fucking noise.
>>
>>383654012
Better paired with a $500 microphone so people can hear all that premium "clak clak clak" at highest sound quality
>>
>>383655597
Depends on where you live. Microcenter if you have one by you generally has a few mechanical keyboards on display. Best Buy will have 1 or 2 on display, at least the Best Buys near me.
>>
>>383654012
I heard its a meme for gaming, but for general/intensive use if you're the type to write a lot on the computer then it's pretty good
>>
>>383655551
>browns over clears
>linear switches ever
>>
>>383655614
What the fuck is the point in that? That's just going to be overly sensitive to press and it doesn't even effect the comfort level since it still has a spring. Yeah, that's definitely going to be a meme. Reminds me of Xbone's magnet triggers shit. Sounds really neat, but fucking sucks compared to normal, good triggers. And still doesn't feel better than gamecube triggers.
>>
they're not necessary but if you've got the extra cash, they're a straight upgrade from a regular one. once you go clack you can't go back.
>>
>>383654012
do they feel nice and look cool?
yes

do they make you gud?
no
>>
I use a keyboard with cherry brown switches because I don't like how noisy reds and blues are.
>>
The only problem with mechanical keyboards is that you can never go back to regular keyboards. When I have to use the school computers at university, it's annoying because I type slower and it's less responsive.

My main game is Dota 2 so I think a mech keyboard helps greatly considering the amount of button presses. I remember having to mash a key to really make sure it would happen on a regular keyboard but now it just happens and I'm not fighting the keyboard anymore.

It's like the arcade stick vs pad argument. A stick doesn't make you a better player but the stick is designed for that kind of game.
>>
Other people typing loudly brings on the red mist, so keep that in mind if you plan on being in earshot of anyone else.

>tfw you fell for the tenkeyless meme

I've had this keyboard for like 4 years now and I'm so fucking sick of it.
>>
>>383656029
What? Reds are linear and by definition less noisy than tactile Browns.
>>
>>383656276
I bought a 60% after having a fuckhuge fullsize with like columns of macro keys and a volume slider somewhere and screen for a clock,
Maybe you're just a faggot, 60% is easily my preferred size now.
>>
>>383655909

Supposedly, faster reaction time and analog input.
>>
>>383654012
Yes. Spend your money on other things.
>>
I'll rate my keyboard experience FWIW

>normal keyboard

Shit fucking tier compared to mechanical

>poker 2 with cherry MX blues

Great keyboard. Cherry blue switches are fucking loud and clicky, but that was the main appeal to me. I love the space-saving factor of the 60% kb

>model M

Amazing piece of history. Even louder, which I personally love. Good feeling on the fingers but a little big for my desk space. A pretty decent amount of actuation force. Your fingers will develop a heavier touch when typing on a Model M.

>HHKB

What I prefer to use now because it feels elegant on the fingers. Weird fucking layout but you grow to love it. Also dead quiet, I kinda miss the clicks but hey. Not technically mechanical, but a rubber dome switch in a completely other league than what you're getting with default bullshit scissor switch stuff you find on consumer-grade products.

I can post pics if you'd like
>>
>>383654012
nkro and tactile feedback, pretty useful
the silent one, that is, the loud ones are stupid
>>
>>383656276
Ten keyless is better unless you're consistently inputting numbers long strings every day. I use a full size keyboard at the office and ten keyless at home.
>>
>>383655597
>I wish I would have had the option to actually test some out before I made a purchase

You can buy key switch samplers for $9-$15 bucks off Amazon. Next time you are ordering your normal bulk pack of Tenga eggs and a gallon of water based lube just throw in a key sampler.

No big deal.
>>
>>383656381
I hate the lack of numpad. I can never get used to using the numbers at the top. Doesn't help that I bought the ultimate meme keyboard and I can't fucking see the numbers.

Tenkeyless are for those that grew up with laptop keyboards.

>>383656549
Mine has blank keys too lol.
I used to have FN'd number keys in a numpad layout, so I'd just hold the caps lock key that I made FN instead then M=1 J=4 U=6 etc. but I got used to the top row numbers eventually.

>>383656650
Was talking about blacks, you are literally retarded.
>>
>>383656795
>He's never seen a $2 bill
Underage B& Detected.
>>
>>383654012
Most certainly not. Red switches are god tier if you're upgrading from a regular membrane keyboard, no matter how cheap of a keyboard you buy. A night and day difference.

Most 'gaming' peripherals are a meme that give you the illusion of having a large edge over opponents with not as good equipment.

Retards still eat it up though because MUH PRETTY LIGHTS ON MUH KEYBOARD AND MOUSE.
>>
>>383656383
Well, I'm not really sure the benefits of analog input on every button, especially since over 90% of users are not going to spend the money on that, so apps/games aren't going to take it into account. But I guess, whatever. The faster reaction timing might be useful for competitive gamers I suppose.
>>
>>383656964

Help I want a cheap(as in $50 or less)mechanical keyboard that's not shit.
>>
Yes they are memes. I bought one once and ended up feeling like I wasted my money. A regular keyboard works just fine.
>>
>>383657146
Most mechanicals don't pretend to be for gaming other than the ones by notoriously shit expensive gaming companies like razer.
>>
>>383655686
yeah, no special keyboards are necessary for gaming
unless the keys are extremely shit and hard to press frequently or you really need macros you can totally play on some 20 dollar shit
>>
>>383657146
>buying mechanical keyboards purely for gaming
Its the retard buyer's fault, not the keyboard itself.
>>
if it was so retardedly expensive for what it is, it would be fine

but yes, dont give the jews your money for slightly better keys
>>
>>383657216
Tomoko is decent or so I heard.
>>
>>383657057
They aren't special at all. Go to a bank.
>>
If you're an addict like me it's great because it is more durable then normal boards.
>>
>>383655664
>They also make way more noise than a rubber dome.
this is why I'll never give up the dome
>>
Want to know why you need a mechanical keyboard?

Hold down both shift keys and type out the alphabet. If you miss any letters, you should invest in a mechanical keyboard.
>>
>>383656383
>faster reaction time
>any form of sensor being faster than a standard circuit switch or a variable resistor for analog
Come the fuck on anon.
>>
>>383654012
Used to think they were a meme until I got one, imo..you really don't realize how hard you pretty on shitty membranes sometimes if you game/type alot in genral.

I ended up getting a shitty chinese knockoff that was actually very solid
https://www.amazon.com/Mechanical-Keyboard-Anti-ghosting-Backlit-Resistant/dp/B071Y4KXWD/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1498521077&sr=8-1&keywords=e+blue+k753

I eventually, got an "official" one later down the road for an actual warranty and I like muh lights But in general I feel its worth the effort in researching atleast if you game/type alot. I also say type because while they have a "gamer" label strapped onto them, they do go well beyond that for use.

It has some ghosting issues though advertised as no-ghosting keyboard. For example, you can't press a, s and u simultaneously.
Otherwise, blue switches feel good to type on. Next time I'll be buyng fullsize tho, fuck keyboardlets, I miss numpad.
>>
>>383659568
tbf that's not ghosting, tho it's been massively misintepreted into being that. it originally meant that pressing ASU might also register a key that you did not actually press.

the real term you're looking for is n-key rollover
>>
>>383654012
They do feel nice but unless you're playing a competitive game at a high level, you're not going to need the improvements a mech keyboard brings. A decent $20 keyboard is good for anyone.
