Later Puyo games use 4 colors as the standard, but I believe MBM (as well as Puyo 1 and Tsu) use 5 colors. Otherwise I think chaining should more or less be the same.

MMR decay is the natural reduction of rating over time if you don't play. In PPT, the top 20 are already set in stone forever, because they were the first 20 to reach 9999 rating and have no reason to ever play a match again and risk losing their leaderboard placement for nothing.

So anons, what do you do if these are your first two sets of puyos?
What form do you go for, and why?

Normally I set the two reds as the bottom of a GTR, and shove the other two to the right of that and hope things work out.
Obviously they don't usually, which is why I'm asking.
Should I just try sandwiches instead?

Depends entirely on what the third set is. If exactly one of its part is red, I'd stick with that GTR strategy. If the third is both green or both blue, red goes to the side in favor of blue/red GTR.

If 3rd set has a piece that matches one of the 2nd's color and another piece that doesn't, I'd put it with the matching colors in the bottom left corner as the GTR base. Seems to work out well enough.

Hmm. That makes sense. I'm always looking out for a double puyo to use as the filling for the GTR when this happens.
But what if the next color is like a green/yellow? I guess I would have to abandon GTR and go for something else.
That being said, I literally only know stair/sandwich, GTR, and long/new GTR.

A less gameplay related question, but still one I can't figure out.

I really enjoy puyo, I'm not particularly good at it, but it's fun to practice it really hard. Watching videos/tutorials, running through chain ideas on chainism, practicing chains against AI, etc.
But I originally got it to play with my friend. We play all kinds of competitive things together, be it fighting games, FPS, etc.
He picked up Puyo and had a much harder time with it than I did, but eventually started getting the hang of it. But I kept getting better at a rate that was faster than him.
Eventually he burned out and decided he was never going to be fast enough or good enough to beat me.
Since then I don't really know what to do. I don't think you guys will have some great answer but I guess I wanted to see if anyone experienced something similar.
Part of me thinks I should find someone one discord to play against, but it doesn't feel the same.

realize that setup is fine if you put a red on the far left above the green, and one blue to the right also on top of the green. As soon as the green is taken away, both will match with their opposite colors.

It's literally just a flowchart. You follow an instruction based on your first two Puyos and then the final image points out where to place a Puyo to set off the Chain.
