neither, Dawn is superior despite the character art for dialogue being bad.

it has by far the best castle in the series except maybe Portrait of Ruin, because that one is so vast due to the painting system.

Portrait of Ruin.
Castlevania 1 blows every metroidvania out of the water though.
>>
>>383648273
I prefer Aria. Wasn't this the first Castlevania to have New Game+? That feature combined with the soul system, chaos ring, and exclusive hard mode items to find made for a really satisfying game to explore and replay. I also love how surreal the environment and concept is, as well as how great the plot is.

Symphony does have a better Belmont Mode though. Julius is great and the fight against him is sooooo much better than Alucard vs Richter, but playable Richter has a lot more options.

SotN is ridiculously good. It objectively is one of the best games ever made. I still go back to it regularly, and try out new challenges and run ideas.

That being said, I think Rondo of Blood is my favorite Castlevania. It's just got so much style and blood pumping action, with absurd amounts of alternate routes and secrets. There's just so much pure fun to be had with Rondo, whereas SotN can get a bit mindless as soon as you're powered up.

I also think Castlevania 1 is a perfect NES game. I love throwing it on during a lazy sunday afternoon and blasting through it. Can't be beat.
>>
My only complaint with Aria is the first four bosses are just normal ass enemies pulled from later in the game.

They're all 10/10 but Dawn gets the bottom of the three because fuck soul grinding in that game, I genuinely ragequit with how long it took grinding souls, only to find out the best weapons require you use boss souls, so I didn't pick it back up until 2 years later.
>>
>>383657194
Still classicvanias. And both were remakes of games that were never released outside of Japan (heck, the X68000 itself was never released outside of Japan) so "new" for most people.
>>
>>383648273
Have to go with SOTN because the animation and visual style is better and the extra weapons are way more creative and interesting. Are they necessary? No, but neither are over half of the souls and weapons in Aria of Sorrow, either.

Dawn of Sorrow (not picced) is closer, but was completely ruined by the shitty touch screen stuff. And unfortunately will always be ruined because after DS's disappear emulation is even more annoying to have to use the touch shit. If there is a way to map the right analog stick to it, then maybe but the bosses would still be impossible to make work without some kind of macro or just using the mouse.

Google how to unlock the original game within the PSP version, you can do it by the 3rd or 4th level. The original is 100000x better, but it might be worth playing through those first few levels of the remake for the sake of comparison. Plus you can take an alternate route in the original if you REALLY don't wanna play the same few levels again (but better).

Super castlevania IV, then get a PSP emulator and Dracula X chronicles. Then SOTN, circle of the moon, aria of sorrow, dawn of sorrow, portrait of ruin and order of ecclessia.

PS2 games are optional but I'd say you should avoid them. N64 games are non-canon but the first one is a good timekiller.
CV3 if you want, but it's ridiculously hard

Avoid at all costs:

>Vampire's kiss, its a dumbed down port of Rondo for the SNES
>Simons quest, absolutely atrocious game design that literally requires a guide to be beaten.
>Harmony of dissonance, a poor man's SOTN that sucks at everything, everything.

Believe it or not that's because HoD was designed as being "SOTN for the GBA", not even kidding that was the actual dev vision, which is why there are so many reused assets from SOTN, guess the controllers also made it back

it was also the game's downfall, for real, since the GBA couldn't deal with the SOTN assets so they had to use an extremely inferior soundchip and dumb down on everything else

better(expanded julius mode/soul fusions) or worst(more grinding/mandatory touch controls) than AoS depending on who you ask. I'm the latter, glad they made touch controls optional in the later titles
>>
>>383664259
Honestly one of my favorites. Yeah, the portraits are bad. Yes, the drawing is unforgivable. But if you were to take those out it's just phenomenal. Just the right amount of soul randomization that each playthrough I end up trying some new things, (something OoE also managed to do pretty well.)

There are a few other annoying bits (Give me two item sets to swap instantly between, but put mandatory movement bullshit like puppetmaster in the game to fill those slots up) but I genuinely enjoy all the areas in the game. And honestly I like the plot of it, sue me. The main twists are good. Julius mode ties in nicely.

It's not the best game. I am not claiming that. It just is not the best one, for reasons I already mentioned. I just think it's really good and gets tossed out the window too hastily.

I also really liked the story minus the ending because I feel it fucking nullifies everything that happened. The story was about Gabriel redeeming himself and restoring his trust in God to beat satan, and he throws it through the window by becoming Dracula.

Has a lot of technical and gameplay nuance (both intentional and not), looks nice, great bosses, awesome bonus mode. Much more balanced than the metroidvanias before it.

Illustrated art obviously looks like crap, Yoko and Hammer are almost totally different characters now, and several parts of the castle feel pretty uninteresting in terms of layout, art, and atmosphere. The soul forging system is weird as fuck.

First game is competent if derivative. Mirror of Fate has a lot of cool ideas but makes a lot of weird and bad decisions, and LoS2 is a fucking mess.

Their problem was never not being "Castlevania enough" (whatever the fuck that means); it was in how hard they blundered their potential.
>>
>>383664791
I actually liked all of them. I would even say that Mirror of Fate is kind of underrated and looked gorgeous in 3D.

It is still a shame that LoS2 turned out how it did since a lot clearly went wrong during development. The castle, combat, and especially the DLC were pretty cool though (although that last one was short and I would have liked to use Alucard elsewhere).

the church did not approve of or support the Belmont family before Trevor defeated Dracula in 1476, they started supporting them after that
In the game I guess it was implied that it also happened because Trevor married into the Belnades/Fernandez family which had connections to the church, but in the show she is a Speaker so it'll probably just be about the new bishop coming to see Trevor's eroic acts or some shit, with the old bishop becoming Shaft

Let's talk about this one.

The boss fights and soundtrack are superb. Everyone of them, memorable. Meanwhile, the Innocent Devil system was as kino as it gets. It was fucking addictive. The entire game was nicely interconnected and there were tons of secret shit to discover, as well as secret bosses. And there were a fuckton of different enemies in this game, each well designes. One major drawback though, was the levels feeling too hallway-ish.

and yet i have to say SotN takes it. there's just so much stuff in it that even without the soul system (which i liked a lot, curly OP) it still held up till the end. finding new weapons and testing their special moves and combinations. the familiars which are also pretty cool and it's nice how at first they mostly suck but as you progress most become OP as fuck and their little details, lines and interactions are very fun. that on top of the great track, visuals and castle just makes it a great game all around with lots of details.

the cool part about playing SotN after AoS is how when i find out about soul steal in SotN it made a lot of AoS make more sense thanks to the beginning scene with Genya

Dawn of Sorrow is too easy, and unfortunately the Hard Mode is only available through New Game Plus, which nullifies the progression and assures that the only difficult part will be the very end where you were supposed to have Claimh Solais.

What I did when I replayed it a week ago was throw away all of my souls and sell (and rebuy an resell) all of my items so I had nothing and started with no money, then went into Hard Mode through NG+. Far better experience than before, and you're actually challenged to experiment with souls and weapon combinations. Definitely give it a try if you've already beaten the game.

I already own it via Dracula X Chronicles so I'm not that worried about getting it.
If I do end up getting the PS1 version at some point I'll probably just grab the Greatest Hits label since that's like 40-50 bucks instead of 80-100.

i think 3 is probably better than 4

i'm surprised people even give a shit about AVGN anymore. maybe it's just me since i never really cared for him or most game reviewers in general, nor did i see what people liked so much about him.

Besides Death, the Giant who kills the bat and Legion, I don't find the gameplay or the castle are very memorable.
I honestly think Aria shines because of its story.
Julius and the gang, Graham, the Chaos etc are really compelling and keeps things mysterious.
Soma inheriting Dracula's power and Alucard/Julius confronting him were really cool moments.

Yeah the Soul system is neat but it's just an expanded iteration of the Card system and both DoS and OoE do it better.

Still among my favorite CVs but not for the reasons everyone else likes it.

Remember to play as the girl when you play a Castlevania game.

Playing as Maria is only acceptable on your second playtrough.

I don't actively hate that game but it's such a slog to get through. I guess most people agree since I can barely find any info about it online, I don't even know what the highest map percentage you can get is

it is arguably the worst castlevania of the GBA

I liked HoD but it's absolute murder on your eyes on anything but an original GBA so I've never played it again.

Everyone complained about CotM being impossible to see on the original GBA so they optimized it for the original's non-backlit screen only to have every subsequent version of the GBA have a backlight which makes the game look awful. I just can't play a game that fucking ugly now and I'm not going to dig out my original GBA just to play it again.
