There are hundreds of mods that certainly improve the game but there aren't many "essential" ones.
Morrowind Code Patch and MGE XE come to mind, as well as any other unofficial patches and graphic overhauls.

I'm currently playing with a shitload of mods but the major ones I would recommend are "LGNPC", "Sotha Sil Expanded", "Starfire's NPC Additions", "Main Quest Enhancer" and "Fligg's Slave Mod".
Don't forget the official Bethesda plug-ins.

They all have their own fun niche depending on what you play. For my personal "perfect" Nerevarine I usually go Redoran as a spear-toting spellsword-type dunmer. Hlaalu on the other hand is perfect as any kind of non-dunmer Outlander and is the house I support whenever I play as an imperial agent of the emperor.

Would've been cool to see House Dres have some kind of presence since they're a big deal, but their holdings are all on the mainland, so it wouldn't really have worked.

Awful combat that has zero depth to it without its already simplistic numbers.

Quests don't have anywhere near the variety in objectives that Oblivion and Skyrim do since Morrowind is so reliant on its stat based abstractions.

Morrowind has more NPCs than Oblivion and Skyrim combined, but they are all generic as fuck with 99% of dialogue options being the exact same. Variety is non-existent. Not having actual NPC schedules like every other TES game doesn't help either.

People praise this game's encouraging of exploring and understanding directions, yet it turns out to be tedious most of the time. I doubt any of you hardcore fans can tell me the names of all Foyadas and exactly where they are without looking it up on the internet first.

Morrowind has the worst dungeons in the series. They aren't the intricate labyrinths of the games before it, while nowhere near as fun to traverse as the modern game dungeons which may have more "straight" path, but each individual bit of a dungeon's far more open than boring/restricted. Also the Tribunal Sewers are the worst dungeons in the series.

The game's most lauded features are its custom magic and its freedom. It's magic system is very hampered by the combination of how clunky the inventory system is with constant pausing/unpausing and how awful the combat is. Both the magic and freedom are also pointless when the game itself has so few systems implemented in it in terms of how the rest of the game interacts with the player as a result of their actions.

Morrowind is the most overrated game on /v/ and possibly of all time. Get better taste.

i am going to tackle the quests "argument" you want variety here is some variety. in morrowind you had a quest in which you had to marry an ashlander chief, you had to battle daedra in a game of riddles so you can complete a pilgrimage. you had to test to see if a skirt was cursed for a crazy wizard. you had to kill a fucking netch with a fork to get a powerful artifact from a daedra. there are plenty of interesting quests that dont rely on stat based shit dumbass. and god forbid a game makes its stats important to its quests. sorry this isnt skyrim where you can be the most non-magical archmage and thief who has never sneaked a day in his life.

My operational assumption is that everyone involved in that battle was an equally massive asshole and liar, and all accounts we can hear are equally suspect. Almsivi were cunts, Dagoth Ur is reverse dead and dreaming, all we know of Nerevar is what we hear from Almsivi, Ur or Ashlander oral tradition, Imperial sources are all derived from the former, and Kagrenac is off comparing notes with Baxter Stockman.

Finished it for the first time last night. What a ride. The build up to meeting Vivec was fantastic and the Hortator/Nerevarine quest prior to that dragged on a bit but was very interesting for the lore nevertheless.

Also I was expecting that the Red Mountain raids would involve you and some buoyant armiger squad, but they're all like "fuck off and just come back if you need to heal".

Now, on to Oblivion and spending all day modding it.
