Well they're not wrong, even if they're the type of fags who probably watched it in Japanese.

>/a/
To be fair, they're technically right. It has an anime style, but it's not true anime because it wasn't produced in Japan by a Japanese studio. It's "anime" in the same vein as Avatar or Voltron Legendary Defender.

Its not good. The gore is alright but everything else about it is lack luster and half assed.

9/10 i loved it and cant wait for season 2
>>
>>383635524
If only one connection is that is needed then Castlevania should be discussed on /a/ as well. The connection being the anime aestetics.
>>
>>383635409
Thunderbolt fantasy and most non-Japanese east asian animation are in a weird gray area
In theory they should be discussed on /co/ but there's more interest overlap in /a/ so all the discussion occurs there
>>

This and please, more than four episodes for the season 2!

7.5/10 shows a lot of promise but ended just as shit was starting to get really good.

>>383635693
Not really how it works on there anon
>>
>>383635471
Wasn't impressed with the animation too much until the action scenes. Seems they dumped all their budget into them.

Overall, I liked it though. Not afraid to show babies getting eaten as Drac' has his demons swarming over the country
>>
>>383635774
Already confirmed for eight episodes, will probably finish the CV3 storyline and set up whatever they do next.
>>
>>383635786
The artist made one too few exchange of blows so the ones that were made just had to be slowed down.
>>
>>383635516
oldfag /co/mrade here, and I honestly have no fucking clue why they're getting so pissy about Ellis, I thought he did a decent job.

I've never read a Warren Ellis comic that I did not enjoy in one way or another, and I know most of /co/ felt the same way at a certain point.

But I guess this current wave on /co/ are the kind fucks that put the orange clown in the in charge of the US, so being mad at Ellis wouldn't be beyond them.
>>
>>383635516

Warren Ellis. He's a pretty prolific comic writer who is (or was) regarded as being pretty good. His best known work is probably Transmetropolitan, a cyberpunk comic about a Hunter S. Thompson-like gonzo journalist.
>>
>>383634658
To be fair Ellis had a really weird setup for the show. Castlevania didn't really have that many evil churches in the games.
Show was still great though, 9/10 for me.
>>
>>383635693
Urobuchi was directly involved in the production though
Castlevania is purely Korean/American produced, the only thing Japanese about it is the IP
If that's enough to make it /a/ then Sonic Boom should belong there too
>>
>>383635910
/co/ would rather have discussions about shit like Total Drama Island and My Littlest Petshop than discuss anything good. Keep in mind that board also hated Shin Godzilla; they have really bizarre taste.
>>
>>383635963
Wasn't Shaft an evil priest? Evil cults have featured in at least three games. Heck, OoE had a corrupt priest as the main bad guy. Also the plot of CV3 was that the church was reluctant to get Trevor's help because they feared his power. Not that much of a stretch.
>>
>>383635976
Speaking of it being Korean, isn't the Korean word for cartoons "Anime" as well?

>muh Ellis
Did nothing wrong.

Wrong. There's nothing in the word "anime" that implies the actual practical source of origin. It implies a loosely defined set of aesthetic traits and this one arguably goes for them.
>what's going on
Neo-imageboard culture. The internet became mainstream. It's cool to be whiny asshole nowadays as long as you can stutter something about political correctness and dealing with "it".

The show's okay. It won't stun anybody but it's not garbage.

Castlevania 1, 3, Super CV4 and Rondo are all good platformers to check out.

Symphony of the Night, Order of Ecclesia, Portrait of Ruin (you should consider playing Bloodlines first) and Aria/Dawn of Sorrow are all good metroidvanias.

Mind you there are other titles I like as well, such as COTM, Lament of Innocence and Curse of Darkness, but those have some issues with bland level design.

Bad news, CV has pretty much always been fujo-dominated in Japan. Expect TrevorxAlucard if anything.
>>
So how come Trevor isn't called Ralph in the Japanese version?
>>
>>383636321
It's still possible to have that if the OP is good at wording stuff and not making it look like bait. Or even disguising it as somewhat related and having quite a bit of fair discussion on a bigger front.

I've noticed this a couple of times. The only times I've been able to discuss EVA without boogymanning and memes is when the thread is low-key dying slowly or when the OP is vaguely related.
I had some decent FLCL discussion with some anons about themes and music in a thread asking what songs we'd like to see in the new seasons and that thread lasted for two days.
>>
>>383636561
Sure it has some style of anime, but it's still considered western animation. The show isn't allowed on /a/
>>
>>383636561
I'd still consider Wakfu a western cartoon. I mean, Batman TAS had several episodes animated by Sunrise but you wouldn't really call it anime would you?

It also gets worse because they celebrate they day they did it to her. And the fucking bishop then deludes himself into believing it happened not because of him, but because people weren't pious enough. No one did anything to stop it either.

You can't help but side with Dracula when people are this really fucking retarded. Guy who hates humans, leaves them alone, and then learns to love one has her ripped away from him for doing the right thing. It's all sorts of fucked.

>You can't help but side with Dracula when people are this really fucking retarded. Guy who hates humans, leaves them alone, and then learns to love one has her ripped away from him for doing the right thing. It's all sorts of fucked.
That's the best part about this adaptation's characters, though. All four of our main charcters are despised, distrusted and hated for their birth. It's how they choose to deal with their situations that makes them heroes or villains. In Dracula's case, he allowed Lisa's death to validate his worldview, and then by his actions he validated the public's fear and hatred of both Dracula and Lisa herself.
>>
>>383636712
Abuse of power including but not limited to burning innocents at the stake and strong arming the city through hired thugs in violence, throw in some pride and delusions and grandeur and you have someone that's strayed from the true path of God while also leading others astray

>Actually, I’m not a gamer! And the awful truth is that I’ve never played or even seen the game. Terrible, isn’t it? When I was first contacted about Castlevania, some 10 years ago, I went to the internet to look it up, and what immediately struck me was how it initially appeared, to me, at least, to be a Japanese transposition of the Hammer Horror films I grew up with and loved. I’m sure that’s a completely wrong-headed perception, by the way, but that’s how it hit me, and how I realized I could write a medieval horror fiction while obeying the ground rules of the work being adapted.

why didn't he just write it like a Hammer movie in that case
>>
>>383637486
That's why it's amazing.
I don't even think the 'What is a man' speech would be nearly as cool if it was even done by a hollywood voice.

Though to be honest I've always wanted to see that scene done in a high-budget cast becuase it has potential to be pretty poetic if expanded upon and done correctly.

To be fair, yeah the "muh religion" complaints are annoying, but the first two episodes were not very good at all. The last two episodes picked up, and it finally found its footing.

Also, the "muh religion" are especially annoying since the series shows that a God exists in this show's universe, and that a holy man can actually make holy water that works against demons. It's explicitly pointed out that the religious figures of the church shown so far have fallen out of grace and are pushing personal agendas instead of leading people towards God.

Depends on what style of game you like more. The original games (and Castlevania 3, which this series is mostly based on) are classic platformers, while Symphony of the Night is more in the vain of exploration platformer with RPG elements. Castlevania 2 was "weird" in that it's sort of a mix between the two (despite being before SotN's time).

I'd say Castlevania 3 if you want a classic platforming game, and Symphony of the Night if otherwise (where most of Alucard's and his mother Lisa's backstory comes from as shown in the Netflix series).

I imagine Ellis wanted to have a more dramatic arc for Trevor, since the Belmont's being exiled by the Church is canon in Castlevania 3. Except in the game, the pope finally realizes they need them because Dracula is fucking shit up, and calls for Trevor Belmont to help them.

I'm fine with narrative changes, but they better not drop Grant Danasty.

8fps is normal in some circles of animation, we can't treat it like video games. This show clearly uses limited animation, where strong keyframes take precedence over in-betweens, a technique developed under the strain of low budget and quick turnarounds. It's more of a Japanese technique but most modern web animators are influenced by anime, and Spencer Wan has that style. Even though it's low frame, you can tell that it's a skilled animator behind them, and that's pleasing in and of itself.

Not sure what you're talking about? It's very much in line with Castlevania (the old lore, not the Lords of Shadow stuff), with the exception of changing how the pope finally giving in and calling for Trevor Belmont to help the people. It's canon that the Belmonts were exiled by the Church in Castlevania 3 (it takes place long before Castlevania 1 and 2, when Simon is working alongside the Church).

Trevor is given a personality which might turn some people off, but he finally mans up by the 3rd and 4th episode and becomes more of the Belmont vampire hunter we expect. To be fair, he had no personality in Castlevania 3, and the only personality he was ever given in a game is in Castlevania: Curse of Darkness (and if you saw him in that game, you'd be glad they changed it; it was stupid). They DID keep the eye scar as he had in Curse of Darkness, though.

It's pretty obvious a bit of research went into the Netflix series.

>" Salt repels demons and evil things because it is pure in its whiteness, is a perservative, and is linked to life and health. Salt is contrary to the nature of demons, who are intent upon corrupting and destroying. It should be avoided in magical rituals for conjuring demons.
> Salt repels witches and the evil eye. A test for bewitchment is the inability of a person or animal to eat anything salted. Inquisitors in the European witch hunts protected themselves by wearing a sacramental amulet that consisted of salt consecrated on Palm Sunday and blessed herbs, pressed into a disk of blessed wax. One means of torturing accused witches was to force-feed them heavily salted food and deny them water.
> Salt is a magical remedy for evil spells. An old recipe for breaking an evil spell calls for stealing a tile from a witch's roof, sprinkling it with salt and urine, and then heating it over fire while reciting a charm. In American Ozark lore, women who complain of food being too salty are suspected of being witches. One way to detect a witch is to sprinkle salt on her chair. If she is a witch, the salt will melt and cause her dress to stick to the chair.
> In superstition it is considered bad luck to spill, borrow, or run out of salt, perhaps because in times past, salt was a valuable and scarce commodity. Spilling salt make one vulnerable to the Devil; the bad luck may be negated by tossing a pinch of salt with the right hand over the left shoulder.
> In Christianity, blessed salt is mixed with blessed water to make holy water."

Dracula/Alucard talk about Lisa a bit in SotN in their final fight. Alucard tells Dracula what her last words were, Dracula does a sort of mournful "Lisa, forgive me" sort of cry, before he's cast out.

Both the succubus Lisa nightmare and the final fight refer to her having last words and some shit about not hurting the humans, and it was very nice that the Netflix series touched on that with Lisa calling out. I wonder if Alucard somehow heard in the show?

That could be cool, but it'd work far better if you established the early Belmonts first.

If the puppets still bother you a lot after three episodes you should probably drop it. The show halfways sells itself on it's great animations and fightscenes. The first episode has about two if not three times as much fighting as the rest of the show in order to sell it to those on the fence, because they're really that good.

The show is good, albeit a bit shallow. There are some alright twists towards the end but otherwise it plays out just like you'd expect it will. I recommend it, but the only person who actually watched it based on my recommedation dropped it because he couldn't get over the puppets.

Just for everyone else's sake unfamiliar with the series reading this thread:

Lord of Shadow/Mirror of Fate/LoS2 and such are entirely different canon than the classic Castlevania lore. It was an attempted reboot. Any mentions of Trevor, Simon, Sypha, etc in those games do not connect to the older games or what the Netflix series is based off of.
>>
>>383644739
My dream game is a 3d Castlevania thread where you have specific vampires that you have to kill, and have to plan around how to do it.

Imagine having the chance to sneak into their room and stake them before they can get up, or laying down traps.

Honestly, a vampire killing game in general would be rad.
>>
So the dialogue in ep 4 implies that Trevor knows what Castlevania looks like on the inside. What do you think this means? He's been in the castle but doesn't know what Drac looks like, I wonder if a demon fucked him up and gave him that scar.

If you want more of that style, you should probably start with Symphony of the Night. It's closely related to what the show is about, and it's still probably the most enjoyable "Metroidvania" style Castlevania there is (even though I liked the Nintendo DS ones). It takes place roughly 300 years after what the Netflix series is about, and follows Alucard.

Rondo of Blood is another good one, and actually takes place only 4 years before Symphony of the Night (and is VERY closely tied to Symphony of the Night). It plays like the classic side-scrolling platformer Castlevanias.

I'd say those two would be your easiest entry points. Gives you both worlds for Castlevania gameplay style, and are closely related enough to possibly help elevate interest.

My opinion, at least. From there, which ones you might want to play can go towards whichever of the two you liked the most.

The Netflix show is based on Castlevania 3 correct? It seems more related in tone to Symphony of the Night, but maybe that is just because of the presence of Alucard, and the Lisa backstory that was touched upon in SOTN.

Are Castlevania 3 and SOTN two separate events in the lore? It gets confusing when some Castlevania games could possibly just be retelling of the same story.
>>
>>383645043
I didn't particularly care for Castlevania 64, but I liked how they handled vampires in that game. When you played the girl who was from the same family as Sypha from 3, she could throw a charged up magic bolt that would home-in and hit enemies. If you used it against a vampire (there were several vampire bosses who were not Dracula before you got to him), the vampire would hop around the room so fast that the bolt couldn't catch up to them.

Was a really nice touch that made me enjoy an otherwise blah game.

Also the violin intro...

Dracula's Curse and Symphony of the Night are centuries apart from one another.

Dracula's Curse depicts the first time the Belmont's met the Belnades clan and Alucard, and for the longest time was the earliest game on the timeline. Symphony of the Night is set years later immediately after Rondo of Blood, though its backstory regarding Lisa took place prior to Dracula's Curse.

The Netflix show is just inserting the Lisa plotline into the events of Dracula's Curse to make a more cohesive origin story.
>>
>>383646135
Totally separate. SOTN takes place some 200 years after CV3. Alucard goes to sleep at the end of 3, confident that the Belmonts have this shit on lockdown, until the castle reappears, seemingly without Dracula's presence, while Richter Belmont is MIA. So he decides to take matters into his own hands.

>So the dialogue in ep 4 implies that Trevor knows what Castlevania looks like on the inside. What do you think this means? He's been in the castle but doesn't know what Drac looks like
I thought he specifically mentioned it's like what he's read, passed down the Belmont family, what the inside of Dracula's castle looks like? Not that he's been inside himself.

He even compares such to the Speakers after he rescues Sypha (the "You know how you Speakers pass down knowledge from generation to generation? The Belmonts do so as well" then talks about what types of stuff is seen in Drac's castle)

I think some of the disconnect is because Castlevania 3 (ignoring for a second how it looked because it was a NES game) style was more based classic monster horror movies for looks, while Symphony of the Night marked the first time the series went for a more Gothic horror fantasy look (that took over from then on as the main look for Castlevania games). Even games that touched on earlier events (Curse of Darkness takes place shortly after Castlevania 3, and even has Trevor Belmont in it) takes the style of Symphony of the Night, so the looks of everyone was effectively retconned.

By the way, don't play Curse of Darkness. Was just referencing it to point out the aesthetic change for a character besides Alucard.

No, it's very explicit that Dracula is evil. He was just effectively "inactive" by the time Lisa comes along (she literally walks through a field of skulls on pikes).

The local priests made him active again (and much earlier before the show exiled the Belmont clan).

She was an innocent (a very foolish and naive innocent who consorted with someone she believed she could turn to good while also pursuing what she wanted).

Hell isn't NECESSARILY bad. But the first who spurned god's love were dicks, so they made it shitty, and shitty it remained.

If the church was in the right, the demons would not have been able to enter holy grounds to kill the Bishop. But they did, because God forsook the church for their vile actions.
If using healing "magic" for the sake of helping humanity makes her a witch, then Jesus healing people made him a devil. Only it doesn't, you're just baiting/retarded.
>The church was actually in the right
The Speakers were in the right, not the church. The Bishop was actually an unknowing ally to the demons, for without his ungodly actions, they would not have been summoned into the world to begin with. Not to mention that he also hired unholy thugs and murderers to harass the populace as a power play. He was an ungodly man at the head of an ungodly institution.
