Is it really overrated though when it's objectively one of the most robust and well put together games in the series? Especially compared to every other game that came after it.

Seriously, Vesperia isn't my personal favorite, but leaving aside stuff like the story and characters which comes down to persona opinion, pretty much everything else about it is heads and shoulders above most of the series from a technical standpoint.

All the other Tales games I've tried I haven't finished, because they were unplayable garbage. But I stuck along for Vesperia for whatever reason, and I'm glad I did.

I really don't understand why the tales games have been such a step back from Vesperia, given how absurdly damn popular it is.
Vibrant, cel shaded visuals, the walk-about world map that was a staple of the series until graces, the most refined version of the symphonia team's tried and true combat.
I say this every thread, but the tales series really needs to rewind and go back through the pre-graces playbook.

As far as the actual gameplay goes, Vesperia is so blatantly the peak that it hurts.

It was the only JRPG on GameCube, along with Skies of Arcadia. Kind of like how Golden Sun is good on its own, but god tier for a GBA game.

Symphonia is still one of the best Tales games, though. I played it for the first time earlier this year.

Apart from Laphi, Eizen, Eleanor and Magilou, I didn't find anything that game had to offer to be interesting at all.

Vesperia is the peak of Tales in almost every way. I only found the combat in Graces better/more enjoyable. Very enjoyable, I played it together on hard with my sibling (both games, actually but did Vesperia solo first).

Vesperia PS3 belongs in the list of the most complete RPG games in existance. It's not perfect, but you can't call anything shit either.

Half the games cutscenes involve asshole dick Luke being used like a fucking tool by his teacher, then the other half of the game is dealing with Luke being a whiny suicidal bitch, ready to jump in front of a passing truck just because he finds out he's a replica.

The gameplay is mediocre Tales gameplay.

Over half of the party members are boring or unbearable. Guy being best bro who didn't ask to put up with that pathetic fuck, and Tear whose just there picking up after everyone else.

Yet it's the best game ever because "REPLICKAAAAAAAA" 1v1 fight that happens all the way at the end.

Also no voice acting for ALL skits, even after getting a port to the 3DS. Who thought that was a good idea? The skits are what more players look forward to than putting up with boring plot cutscenes.

Abyss had the opposite problem where Luke was completely devoid of it himself. Lloyd was mostly on the level but Yuri was hanging out with an actual kid and a naive princess, him doing some babysitting is not to be unexpected.

Raven, Judy and Rita all had sense of their own though with questionable degrees of sanity I suppose
