I made an rpg maker game with default assets like a decade ago. I played it with my brother and was amusing. As things got more complex and longer to make I got bored and quit. No way in hell im making a real game that would require work.
Reasons have pretty much been outlined above. I have always dreamed of an incredibly detailed fantasy universe, and from time to time I type shit out regarding it. Have wanted to try and realize it in different ways, like in a text-based system, an MMO (gave up on that as it would be a project involving too few people to tackle the intricacies of networking), or a single-player, open-world game with heavy focus on roleplay and emergent gameplay in a super massive world. It would take ages to finish but I think I would have the most fun doing the latter. It seems like it would be neat to have a game where you could experience something really unique on every character you make, but there still be a lovingly hand-crafted feel to the world that doesn't become generic via lazy proceduralization. Used appropriately, procedural content can be really cool though.
If I were to go about this, would unity be fine or should I look into a different engine? I have basic unity knowledge thus far

Making games isn't as fun as playing them
