The rules are just for categories of runs which are decided by the runner ahead of time. Ultimately they don't really matter because records are rarely set in a marathon setting and only ever in newer runs.

glitchless is a marathon favorite just because they tend to take longer and show off more of the game and some core skills as well as interesting ways to break the game balance without using bugs.

Glitch runs are constantly changing and add a flavor to the event but they usually show a completely alien experience and tend to be extremely short.

They aren't "rules" they are just a way of sorting very different ways to get to the end of the game
